What do you do when your child finds it hard to learn some subject or subjects? It is quite common to find school-based learning inadequate for your children as they may fall behind in specific subjects and require a bit of special care in the same. As the responsible parent, we are, we take notice of this and get our students enrolled for tuition. Isn’t this the manner in which we react? But does our responsibility end once we enrol our kids for tuition? Do we have to do something more?
Yes, we have to!
We have to monitor the progress of our kids and analyse whether the tuition programme is producing positive results (improvement) or not. You need to keep track and in order to do this efficiently, you need to know what your children are learning at their tuition centres. Now that we have identified the aim, the only thing required is to find out the means.
Check the books
Tuition centres provide your kid with notes. The tutors might also make them practice questions in order to ensure that they gain in-depth knowledge. So the first place for you to look is in the notebooks that your child takes to the tuition centre. Peruse these books and get an idea about the approach and the quality of notes as well as the practice questions.
Run a test
Now you have to determine whether the tuition programme and notes are sufficient for your kid. How do you do this? You run a practice test of your own for your child. You could use previous years’ question papers of the same course for this. Ask your child to prepare for the test using the notes from his tuition. His performance in the test will help you gain insights into what he is learning at tuition and how effectively he is learning it.
Speak to your child
While you are driving your child to tuition or school or while you are with him at some other place, start a casual conversation. Get him to speak about the tuition sessions. If you are the one who drives him back after tuition then it is good if you make it a practice of letting him speak to you about what he learned at tuition every day during the drive back home. You can put in an innocent question or two during these casual talks and gauge the level of grasp that your child has acquired in the topics that have been discussed.
Collecting and dissecting feedback
Speak to your child’s tutors about his progress periodically. Hear what they have to say. Get to know about the study plans that the tutors have prepared well in advance and try getting a copy of the same. Keep an eye on the test scores that your child gets at the tuition centre as well as at school. If the tuition centre has an online student portal or dashboard then check it regularly for updates as well as progress reports. You can also try speaking to the parents of other students at the tuition centre and find out if there are any common concerns.
Your responsibility as a parent does not end once you enrol your child into tuition. Paying the tuition fee and making sure that your kid gets to the sessions without fail would not suffice. Active monitoring of what he is learning at the tuition centre and his progress should be part of your routine. Stay alert and aware. Make sure that your child is getting his time’s worth at the tuition centre. If you have opted for online tuition which offers an advanced dashboard-based learning platform, then you will be able to monitor your kid easily by logging into the tool. It is always better to make the most out of technological advancements as they help in making our lives easier and manage things effectively. In the field of education, there has been a tremendous boom in the online way of learning and you should definitely check it out!
