Is being innovative a product of nature or nurture? The reality is that kids aren’t born innovative. They need the right guidance, support and skillset to grow up as innovative individuals. At present, it is more likely that the future Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, or Sundar Pichai is in your home. Sounds crazy? Well, all the three famous personalities we have mentioned above were children once and had a childhood journey that contributed to their entrepreneurial journeys. The rest is history!
Ever wondered how a kid that swallowed ant poison could be the founder of one of the largest companies in the globe? That’s the story of Steve Jobs.
All the modern day tech giants have had a childhood similar to ours and our children. But by the manner in which their interests were nurtured and the support they have been provided with, they turn out as exemplary personalities.
So, how do we raise innovative kids?
Narrate success stories
Children are inspired by stories. When it is a real-life story, children get all the more excited. There are several documentaries available on Netflix and other streaming platforms that cover the struggles as well as achievements of big Tech leaders. These stories can be highly inspirational to your children and help them explore new realms.
Read to them, right from a young age, about famous personalities who have achieved big even after coming from a low income family. Explain them about the struggles they had to come across at a very young age and the way in which they overcame them. These stories can influence the way our children think and handle situations in their daily lives.
Improve their eagerness to explore more
“What we know is a drop, what we don’t know is an ocean.”
What our children learn at school is only 30-40% of the entire subject topic. To have better understanding of the subject concepts, children need to have this urge to learn more. Parents need to encourage their children to browse through online forums and videos where children get deeper insights of individual subject concepts. For example, if your children are taught about “profit and loss” at class, they need to look up videos where the practical implementation of this concept is illustrated. There are plenty of online learning platforms that can help your children in this regard. Make sure you pick the one that best complements your children’s classroom learning experience.
Step out of the comfort zone
It is a wide known fact that 8 out of 10 parents who are doctors, raise their children in the same field of study. The same holds true for lawyers and innovative business leaders as well. Their children end up working in the same business and further contribute in growing their legacy. There is nothing wrong with this approach. But it is important that our children’s interests are put in the forefront.
Encourage them to explore new domains and check out their interest levels in each. If you find them interested in any particular domain, support them with additional learning materials. By doing so, children will step out of their comfort zone and look to explore adverse career options.
Spend more time with your children
You can understand your children better only by spending more time with them. With most offices moving to the WFH or hybrid model, parents have been gifted enough to spend more time with their children. They need to keep an eye on their children frequently which helps them understand their interests better. Figuring out your children’s passion is possible only when you spend lots of time with them. Children need to find their own passion and purpose in life, and parents just need to play the role of a supporter and enabler in their daily lives. Of course, the timely inputs and experience sharing sessions from your end are mandatory. But it should be more conversational.
Encourage Experimentation
It is often noticed that parents of innovative kids offer them a diverse range of adventures so they can discover what they are really passionate about. Well, experimentation and adventures do come with its own share of risks. Make sure you warn your children about the risks they need to stay wary of, so that they remain better prepared and equipped to face the challenges.
Even if our kids do not turn out to be innovative personalities in the future, it is important for us, as parents, to raise them as innovative kids for them to explore and self-discover different realms of life. The times that we spend with our children in adventures and experiments are not just memories to cherish upon, but also life lessons which will help them handle complex situations with ease.
We wish you all the best in your journey to raising innovative kids! 🙂
