“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” Language is what has made us who we are today. Man’s ability to observe, learn and pass on what knowledge they possess from one generation or even a civilization to another is what has made all progress possible. This clearly indicates the importance of writing. Besides this, writing can have many immediate effects on our daily lives. Writing can help your children gain advantages over their fellow mates and develop mental and intuitive skills well. Let us look into why it is important to encourage your children to develop writing skills. This blog entry aims to provide some tips on how you can develop good writing skills in your children through fun activities which both of you can enjoy.
Importance of writing
Writing is an important skill for your children- not just for scoring high grades, it also helps form different aspects of your child’s personality. Some of the advantages it can bring about are as follows:
- Helps children improve their imaginative skills.
- Helps them improve their communication skills.
- It helps them to express themselves better.
- Let them understand the language and gain more general knowledge.
- Improves their thought process.
- Helps develop empathy for others. The creative aspect of writing involves thinking from different perspectives and putting yourself in others’ shoes. It will naturally bring about a growth of empathy for people around them.
- Improves problem-solving and pattern analysis skills
- Helps boost confidence
- It can act as an outlet for their pent-up emotions and thoughts.
- Could turn out to be what they make a career out of
- It can help children get part-time writing jobs.
Activities:
Finish a story
You can give out story prompts or even half of a story to your children. It should be a story they have not heard before. Ask them to write the rest of the story, as they please. Let them write freely and use any storyline that they wish to use. But once they get used to it, you can gradually make it more challenging. You can try adding conditions on how they have to progress the story- for example: how many characters should be there, or even asking them to think out of the box, and come up with interesting storylines. Such challenges can help improve their thinking, imagination, and adaptive skills.
Name game
Print down pictures of different objects and ask your children to write down their names under them. It is more suitable for young children and can help them in learning the names of different things and also improve their spelling skills.
Guess the dialogue
This is another interesting activity you can try out. If you look online, you can find comic columns and strips with the dialogue bubbles blanked out. You can print them out and ask your children to guess and write down in the bubbles what the characters might be talking about. It can help them see from the perspective of different people and also improve their conversational skills.
Word Gamess
There are many you can try out. One suggestion we have for you is to give your children a letter and ask them to write a word starting from it. Next, write a word starting with the last letter of the current word they wrote. Ask them to complete several words of their choice.
You can check out YouTube and see how letters and words can be used to draw. Show it to your children and encourage them to try it out.
Start a journal
A journal can not only be a writing activity, it can also be an emotional outlet and a tracker for your children. They can see how they have progressed over time and also be a fun daily activity. Respect your children’s privacy and do not use their journals as a way to spy on their activities and secrets.
Rhyming words
Write out a list of rhyming words. Try to write as much as possible. Then you can ask them to make sentences using them. It can be a fun activity. Children can come up with the most innovative and fun ideas when you encourage them. Try it out and your children might surprise you.
Write letters
Ask your children to write letters- to their friends, relatives, or better yet, to their future selves. Ask them to write about their goals and hopes for the future and what they would like to remind their future selves.
Tag Team writing
Take turns writing a story or poem. You can write one sentence and ask the other person to write the next. Make the most of your imagination and take it through every path possible. It will surely be a fun experience to look forward to for you and your children.
Greeting Card wishes
Make greeting cards for different occasions and get your children to write down heartfelt messages. Tell them to be creative and try to come up with interesting wishes. If they are satisfied with it, you can even encourage them to give it out to people when there is an occasion the next time.
Rewrite a story ending
Take a story your children are well familiar with and then ask them to reimagine and rewrite the ending in any way they would like.
We hope you and your children have a fun writing experience. All the best! 🙂
