In the Google-centric world that we inhabit today, information is at our fingertips. In an instant, you can access the answers to any question. But are answers all that there is? The information revolution and gadget boom brought about by technology have reduced our tendency to question things. Questions have always been the driving force of history and progress. As such it becomes imperative that we see to it that our younger generation does not end up losing the ability to ask intelligent questions. But how do we get this done? Let’s check out a few pointers about how we can teach our kids to ask intelligent questions.
Books, books and more books
Good questions can emanate only when you have a vibrant mind. The best way to attain such a state of mind is to inculcate the habit of reading. Reading is to the mind what a whetstone is to a sword. It keeps the mind sharp. A sharp mind ponders more about the world in a critical and creative manner. Try to get your kids to read good quality books. Making them regular readers of newspapers is a good idea as well. Pick out news articles which are good for children and make sure that they read them.
Explain!
There is always a lot of stuff happening around us. Make use of it. The next time you go to vote at the elections or pay for a parking ticket explain the rationale behind it to your kid. Speak to them about everything. It helps if you can put the words in an interesting manner. But even if you fail to do so continue with it. Hearing about things will surely increase awareness and this would definitely rouse at least some doubts in young minds.
Do not shame them
Yes, we want our kids to ask intelligent questions. But there is a great chance that they start off with really illogical or absurd questions. Dealing with these questions is extremely important. Never chide your kid for asking such questions. It might be a stupid question, but you are not supposed to tell that to your child or behave in a manner so as to show disdain. Such an experience would embarrass a child and he would always hesitate to ask a question the next time. So whatever questions are raised, answer them in a patient and pleasant manner. Encourage your child to keep on asking more questions and always be ready to answer them. Creating a conducive environment is key to getting your kids to ask questions. Your child should feel free enough to raise his queries. If he feels that his doubts would be met with ire or ridicule, then he would rather keep them to themselves.
Add rewards
Add small rewards to the process. Increase the scale of the reward depending upon the quality of the question. This makes sure that your kids get more involved and push themselves to ask better questions. Competition always betters performance. Add to this a few words of appreciation as well. This can help boost your kid’s morale.
Inquisitive minds can conquer the world. Teach your kid to question and ponder about the wide cosmos that stretches beyond. As stated earlier, progress is achieved only when we start to ask questions and seek answers to them.
