The 19-year-old swimming sensation “Gan Ching Hwee” has again made it to the headlines recently with her winning 5 gold medals in all the swimming events held at this year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Vietnam. Known for long-distance swimming events, this was Gan Ching Hwee’s third appearance at the SEA Games. Her first was in the 2017 Kuala Lamur games where she secured a bronze medal. Again in the 2019 games held in the Philippines, she raised her medal tally by winning 2 gold and one silver medal. Besides excelling in swimming and winning medals, she also manages to produce excellent results in her academics as well. She scored a perfect score of 45 for her International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations last November. With such achievements, which parent would not wish for their children to grow up emulating her? So, with the knowledge that each child is unique, how can you raise a child who is motivated and inspirational to others?
Many might attribute such success to genetic or innate abilities one was born with. But that is not all there is to Gan Ching Hwee’s success story. There is a whole exemplified record of patience, dedication, and hard work behind it all. By trying, even your children might be able to achieve similar feats. So, let us look at how you will be able to help your children achieve such a progress.
Time Management skills
One of the biggest reasons successful youths attribute their success to , is the proper planning and management of the time they have. In specific, constantly keeping up with her (Miss Gan) training routine and even then managing to find time to focus on her academics shows how skilled she was at managing whatever time she has at her disposal. So, try to get inspired from this and teach your children to put the time they have into proper use. Help them make plans and keep to them. Make sure they allow time for important activities and not just spend time browsing and scrolling through their mobiles. You need to help your children understand that everyone has the same 24 hours a day timeline, but whoever makes the most out of it will outshine the others and achieve greater heights.
Perseverance and dedication
Behind the success of every person, there will be a story of them persevering when others gave up. Only through dedication to the task they are doing and persevering through even when you feel like quitting can you become someone worthy of success. Teach this important point to your children.
Have a routine and structure in life
Having a structure in life and having a proper routine in life can help your children develop habits that will help them throughout their lives. Make a timetable and make sure your children keep to it. You can include a wide variety of activities your children like in the planning. Talk with them and see what they would like their routine to be like. Make suggestions and also correct them if they are not right. Guide them through with daily hard work and by building healthy habits. The more hours your children put into something, the better they become at it.
Encourage and support them
As parents, the biggest gifts you can give your children are not money or wealth; it is your love and unconditional support. One of the reasons that many other talented and accomplished people were able to reach where they are is due to the support from their parents and loved ones. We are not saying without the help of parents and people around them, one can’t succeed- it is possible, but it is an even harder path. The plants that are watered daily and nurtured will grow up stronger than those which are neglected. So, whatever your children want to pursue, if you see that they have their heart set on it, support them and stand by them. Your unwavering support can help boost their confidence and also help them climb back from despair and rejection in situations they fail to deliver.
Raising accountability and responsibility
The children themselves need to have accountability and responsibility if you want to see them grow up and succeed. Teach your children to be responsible and raise them to be accountable. Hold them to their words and make sure they do what they are supposed to. Allow your children to make decisions and most importantly, respect that.
The point of it is to see what can help your children grow up well. It should in no way lead you to compare your children with other children. You should just point out such exemplified youth to your children and ask them to take notice and observe. It should never be to question why your children can’t be like them. It will only cause your children to feel demotivated and get distant from you. Every child is different and the way they will show their talent will be different too. Make sure you keep that in mind.
Let us remember that each of our children is unique, and that we need to hone the potential and talent in them. Let us recognise the individuality of each child, and respect that, helping to ensure that they reach their own true potential. It takes love, respect and perseverance to raise a child, three cheers to that! 🙂
