Mistakes – how many of us shudder at the mere mention of the word? Yes, that’s not surprising. We aim for perfection, and whenever we fall short, we feel bad. But unknown to many of us, “mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before.” That being said, touch your hearts and ask yourselves – do you like making mistakes?
Not many would answer ‘yes’ to that question.
What happens when you make mistakes? You mostly end up feeling down, defeated, or disappointed. Well, I guess that explains why we dislike making mistakes.
But are there some things that we can take away from mistakes?
How can we respond to mistakes?
So what happens after we make mistakes? Well, there are different thought processes that happen after that.
- Denial: Mistake? No way! You just deny the fact that you ever committed a mistake.
- Brooding: You realize that you made a mistake. And what do you do next? You spend a great part of the foreseeable future thinking about and brooding over your mistake.
- Utilization: Yes, you realize that you did indeed make a mistake. Instead of brooding over it or denying it, you learn from it and use that knowledge going forward in your life.
Now, here’s a question for you. Which of the three courses of action is the best? Ah, it seems obvious, doesn’t it? You should try to learn from your mistakes and move forward. As logical as it may sound, it is also something that we often fail to put into action in our lives. So let’s focus a bit on this. We’ll go step-by-step.
Admit it!
Now, this can be the hardest part, admitting that you were wrong or that you had made a mistake. The golden rule is that you simply cannot move forward unless you acknowledge what’s wrong. If you deny your error, then you are just hindering any opportunity that you may have to improve. Even the individuals who are doing well have to go through many failures before they get to where they are now.
Analyse it
Once you’ve acknowledged that something is wrong, then comes the part where you analyze and identify what exactly went wrong. Let’s see how this will work in action.
Let’s say that you are unable to complete your syllabus topics on time. Once you acknowledge this, then you need to analyze. Now, there might be a number of possibilities as to why you are unable to complete the topics in your syllabus. It could be because you aren’t paying adequate attention in class or because you lack an organized study timetable or even because your sleep cycle is totally disrupted. Whatever the reason may be, you’ve got to use your detective skills and find it.
Accept that these things happen
Once we get to the root of the mistakes we are making, there’s a great chance that we would end up kicking ourselves for making those mistakes in the first place. It might seem really stupid and irresponsible to you that you had allowed yourselves to make such mistakes. Don’t be too hard on yourselves. Just ask yourself another question – ‘who doesn’t make mistakes?’ That’s right, everyone makes mistakes. We all mess up some time or the other.
So the next time you make a mistake, chill and just admit it. (then again, by no means is this a license to keep on repeating the same mistake)
Make sure it never happens again
Your mistakes are not a reflection of any iconic movie whose visuals you have to rewind in your minds every now and then. That being said, take the message from each mistake and make sure you never find yourselves in a similar predicament. Don’t make the same mistakes. But use the wisdom that you gained from past mistakes to go forward in life and achieve higher goals.
This is quite a poignant moment to be speaking about all this. Many of you may have received your examination results by now. Regardless of the outcome, realize that it’s not your mistakes or failures that define you. It all depends on how you react to outcomes.
To all the kids out there, remember that you guys are young. There’s a great deal of life waiting for you out there. So your mistakes are not final. They are just stepping stones that would help you improve! 🙂
Moving on from Mistakes, Failure and Regret 🙂
