7 days; just 1 week away from the first written PSLE paper. Primary 6 students, how do you feel? Are you feeling stressed about the upcoming exams?
If yes, you should check out our previous blog on “How to stay calm during the exam period?”.
Once you’ve gotten over the “stress” phase of the exam season, let’s get onto the next most important factor surrounding exams – “Support”, which parents (are you beside reading this?) need to provide their children to the fullest.
With the written PSLE exams looming around the corner next week, we are sure your children are working hard.. You might have been involved throughout their exam preparations, helping them set up timetables, practice taking mock tests, doing revisions, and so on. Through this stressful time, you might be wondering if you can do anything more to help them. Now, you should take some time to offer them support in a different way.
The road to exams is the time when the stress is at its peak. So, perhaps you can take on the role of guiding the players through last-minute strategies. You can help your children deal with exam jitters and stress. Keep an eye on their health and fitness. Above all, make sure their emotional health is doing fine.
Here are some tips to help you cover your role as a coach –
Help them prepare mentally
Your children might be doing very well with academic preparation. But, they can be affected by stress, fear, and many times, anxiety. These negative emotions can affect their academic performance. How can we avoid our young ones reaching this breaking point? Lend a listening ear, hear their worries out, and talk to them. Remember to be as open as possible, and eradicate all forms of nagging!
Also, make sure your children understand that their effort is what matters to you the most. If they dedicate themselves and put in their best effort, let them know that you are proud of them. Do not admonish them over a few lost marks. Teach your children that their value or worth doesn’t depend on the outcome of a single exam and that if they fall, they can always get up and try again. Try to foster a growth mindset in your children.
Take care of their health
Your children might be overworking themselves, thereby making less time for sleep and rest. Make sure they get enough sleep during this time. Sleep is very much needed for their brain to function well. So, skipping sleep is the same as not studying for the exams. Tell your children this and make sure they follow a healthy sleep schedule. Also, make sure they exercise and stay fit. If they have any signs of fatigue or fever, consult a doctor immediately. Teach them to meditate, which can be calming and also improve concentration. You can try it with them and make it a family activity.
A healthy diet can do wonders
Most parents might not be giving much importance to nutrition during exam times. The food your children eat can have a lot of influence on their health and exam preparation. A well-balanced diet can help improve memory as well as concentration.
- Never start the day on an empty stomach. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, try to start the day with a healthy breakfast. It will give your children the energy to work hard and avoid them getting distracted by thoughts like ‘What’s for lunch?’.
- Do not overfeed them at any mealtime as it can cause drowsiness and can affect their study time. Instead, you can give healthy snacks like fruits and nuts in between study sessions. It can provide them with the fuel to carry on without making them feel drowsy after a big meal.
- Make sure your children stay hydrated. If your children are reluctant to drink water or they keep forgetting to drink, you can buy them cool water bottles to keep beside them while studying. Seeing the bottle will remind them to drink water. Drinking enough water can help improve brain function and improve the health of your children.
- Make sure to use ingredients that can help improve their health and aid in improving their brain function. Including fruits and vegetables in your children’s meals provides valuable vitamins and minerals and helps in strengthening the body’s immunity. Nuts rich in fatty oils and other essential nutrients can be snacks in between study sessions. Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lean meat, eggs, and milk – all these provide vital nutrients that help improve brain function and also help keep your children healthy. Try to find out the health benefits various food items can give your children and plan your meals accordingly.
- Giving children healthy meals is not an easy task. They might not be interested in all the health benefits and might set on junk foods. So, try to make the food appealing to them. One way you can get them to have all these is by making sandwiches. Use the different healthy ingredients to make different sorts of sandwiches that might appeal to them. You can also search online for kid-friendly meals you can prepare out of healthy ingredients.
Exam times are hard on students. So, make sure they know that you understand what they are going through. Never undermine their efforts or belittle them. Always make sure they know that you will love them no matter what.
We wish you and your children all the very best. Here’s hoping for a fruitful exam season for all of us! 🙂
