The PSLE listening comprehension exams are near. So how prepared are you? With a 10% weightage in the overall assessment of language subjects, the listening comprehension part is something that cannot be neglected. It might appear daunting for some of us, but at the end of the day, listening comprehension is an area where you can excel if you keep a few things in mind.
Today, we’ll share with you a few tips and tricks to ensure that you are at your best and make the most out of it during your listening comprehension exams.
Focus is the key

What is the main quality of a good listener? He/she listens. But that’s not all. Good listeners pay attention. This is the golden rule when it comes to listening comprehension as well. Stay focused and pay attention. Now, isn’t that easy? Well, experience teaches us that it not always is.
What do you have to do then to ensure that you stay focused?
Firstly, don’t freak out. Try to remain calm and maintain your composure. Worrying about stuff while you are inside the exam hall is definitely not going to help you. It’s only going to let your mind divert off to a myriad of things irrelevant to your examination. In the run-up to the listening comprehension examinations, practice the habit of staying calm. (Trust us when we say that is going to help you big time)
Trust yourself inside the exam hall. What does this mean? Don’t second-guess yourself. Trust yourself and what you actually hear. You are listening to a language that you are quite familiar with. You would have also put in the required effort. Realise that you are capable of putting up a good performance.
Practice for perfection
How do you get better at stuff? You practice, more and more. When it comes to listening comprehension, this rule is as true as it gets. Listen more to conversations in the languages that you are going to have to take your exams in. Try to use those languages more in the run-up to your examinations. Here is where the entire family can kick in. To all the parents out there, if you child is having PSLE listening comprehension, then at least in the few days preceding the exams, strike up all your home conversations in the languages that they are attending their exams in. Make sure you have got your adequate share of practice come the exam day.
Take a look at the question first
For the PSLE examination, you will have the option to look at the text of the question before you actually listen to the audio. So how should you go about things?
We suggest that you take a look at the questions first. How does that help? Well, it makes sure that you know well in advance about what you are listening for in the audio. While listening, you can be more focused on zeroing in on the answer if you follow this process.
Even when you are sure of the answer after listening to the audio once, don’t be in a haste to put down your answer. It’s better to be safe and sure than act in haste. Keep that in mind. Re-listen to the audio before you put down your final answer. Now yes, this can get a bit boring (But you really have no other choice). Practising this technique in advance at least for a few times can help you be at ease with it (yes, that can make it less boring and more of a matter of routine).
These simple tips will be more than enough for you to ace your listening comprehension. Don’t worry, you’ve got this. You have prepared well enough and you know what to do and what not to do inside the exam hall.
