How can I memorise better?

Posted on October 19, 2020October 19, 2020 by 88tuition.com

“Oh no, I can’t remember the definition of biological catalyst!” “Sigh, what is that mathematical formula that helps me to calculate the area of a sphere?” Sounds familiar? Well you’re not alone! These thoughts are very common and many students find themselves in situations when they end up staring into thin air while trying to recall a piece of information that they had learned earlier.

More often than not we tend to overload our brains with information while learning. What is the logical consequence of this action? You are unable to access the right information at the right time. Is there a way around this? Can you memorise things in a better manner? Yes, you can! And yes, you should develop a learning style that allows you to remember content better. This will help enhance your efficiency at learning. Let’s take a look at a few simple tricks that will help you in this regard.

Understand what you learn

You seldom forget something that you have understood in a comprehensive manner. Even if you forget such things, you will be able to easily recall the same with a bit of refreshing. But what happens when you read something casually or just try to learn the information by-heart? More often than not it will be a tedious task to recollect what you have learned in such a manner.

Learning without understanding is like swallowing your food without chewing it properly. It will only end up upsetting your stomach. Always try to process what you learn and gain a firm understanding. This will result in better retention.

Give yourself the needed sleep

Can you expect to retain what you learn when you are sleep-deprived? If our body needs to function properly then it requires an adequate amount of sleep. All our activities can be impacted negatively if we do not invest this adequate amount of time in sleep. So getting your sleep cycle right can bring you better efficiency while learning and recollecting the content that you have learnt.

Repeat and Revisit

We learn a whole set of information at school. The volume of information that we process can be enormous. It is only natural for us to tend to forget many things from the large pool of what we learn. How do you combat this? Well, you periodically refresh everything that you have learned. Do quick bouts of revision every now and then. Revision should be a regular feature of your normal study plan.

Scribble your own notes

While learning, it is highly advisable that you prepare your own short notes. Why do we say so? This practice comes with two benefits. Making your own notes while learning ensures that whatever you learn is cemented in your mind. Another benefit is that you can fall back on these notes anytime you want for a more revision session.

There is a caveat though. Always make your notes concise. You do not want your notes to look more voluminous than the textbooks that you use.

Try a hand at teaching

The ones who teach tend to learn better. Do you have a friend to whom you can teach the stuff you have learned? Then make use of the opportunity and teach! Students can even teach the topics that they have learned to their parents (yes parents, you will need to play along). Teaching helps to identify the extent to which a person has mastered a particular topic and helps improve the efficiency of learning.

Innovate a bit

Innovative learning methods can bring in enhanced results and better retention. Use your own mind maps to remember things in an easier manner. For example, while trying to remember some important dates, you can connect it with the birthday of someone you know, provided that their birthday is somewhere close to the required date. Using online learning videos can also help. Many of these videos utilise animations and other enhanced visualisation techniques to enrich the learning experience. These techniques allow for better recollection as well.

Keeping everything that you learn in your accessible memory can be a bit challenging. But it is definitely a challenge that you can master and eventually, excel at. Try your hand at a few techniques that we have mentioned, to improve your efficiency at learning. These memory tricks can do the trick for you.
