“It takes a village to raise a child.” Being a parent is no easy feat, and many of us feel that it is extremely challenging to raise kids in today’s world. This is especially if the children are young or have special needs, it requires great patience and effort from parents. But even with all that, your children need your unconditional love and support. Many of you might find it hard to do so, at least on a few occasions. If you fall under any of the above-mentioned categories, this blog is for you!
Power of unconditional love
The best gift parents can give their children is unconditional love and acceptance. Children who grow up in such households grow up emotionally and mentally healthy. They develop better interpersonal and people skills and good communication abilities. Such children also have a high tolerance for stress. Growing up in an environment where children receive unconditional love and support helps them develop empathy towards all and have a better understanding of other people
So, how can you love and accept your children unconditionally?
Accept their shortcomings
No one is perfect in this world. So don’t expect your children to be so. Understand what their weaknesses and shortcomings are and try to accept them.
Communication is key
Talk to your children and try to understand them. Instead of telling them to do things arbitrarily, discuss with them and explain their responsibilities. When they do something you might get angry about, take a few moments to breathe and calm down. Then talk to them about why they did so and what you feel about it. If you can get them to see your point, they will most likely not make that mistake again.
Empathize with them and see from their viewpoint
Try to see things from your children’s viewpoint. It will help you understand them better and communicate better with them.
Read up on child development and psychology
Loving someone unconditionally requires understanding. To understand your children better, you will need to brush up on your knowledge. We are in a world where most of human knowledge is accessible to us over the internet. Try to find and consume information that will help you understand your child’s development and their mind.
Spend more time with them
What your children need from you is not just your money or resources. They require your presence and love. Some parents think that buying their children the best gifts and letting them have the best things money can afford is how to show their love. They often forget to spend time with their children. You will regret all the time you didn’t spend with your children once they grow up. So, take some time to be with your family. It doesn’t have to be some expensive trip somewhere, it can be a walk in the park, a movie night with family, or even a daily dinner together. Every moment counts.
Have realistic expectations
Parents come to resent their children mainly due to the unreasonable expectations they place upon their children. Try to understand your children, their strengths and weaknesses, and what their wishes in life are. If you do that, you will have a better idea about what your children are capable of. Base your expectations on that. It will help you avoid unnecessary disappointments and is also healthy for your children. Try not to make your children grow up bearing the weight and stress of expectations that are beyond their abilities. You will only be setting them up to fail.
Express your love for them
Don’t be the strict parents who think that showing affection to your children will spoil them. Express your love freely. Make your children see and feel the love you have for them. Hug them often, tell them you love them, ask about their day, show interest in what they like. Love is something that needs to be expressed, not something to be stored in your heart.
Ask for help
If you feel like you need help or if you are conflicted about something, there are many online forums and help groups you can ask for help. Moreover, there are child mental health experts and parenting advisors who you can contact easily these days. They are just an internet search away from you. Don’t think that asking for help means you are not a good parent. It just shows how much you care about your children.
Keep your anger levels in check
Most of us are quick to react – especially when it comes to expressing anger. We often lash out at the smallest provocation. Parents have lots of things nagging in their minds at all times. So, sometimes it is natural that they will lose their temper and lash out at their children. Try to control that side of yours. Try not to take the stress and pressure from your workplace back home. Monitor yourself and see how you behave when you are angry. You can try meditation and mindfulness exercises to control your mind.
Also, let us all be more reasonable and logical. When your child does something you might not approve of, instead of lashing out at them, look into why they did it. See whether there is a core issue that needs to be addressed. Work on those. It will help better the relationship between you and your children.
We hope all the pointers mentioned above help in developing a healthy and happy bonding between you and your children. All the best! 🙂
