PSLE has come and gone, and now we are left with a few weeks before the end-of-year examinations. With some of these exams being cancelled for various levels, it can be said that we deserve a break. But! For many of our primary school students, there may be weighted assessments held to help gauge where academic standards lie. In this blog, we are going to share a few study tips for students who may need some guidance.
Be organized
Having a cluttered and disorganized room can be distracting for children. So, try to keep your room or wherever you choose to study, clean and organized. Try to set a designated study place that is not your bedroom, if possible. And make sure your children are not disturbed when they are in their study rooms.
Revise everyday
If possible, revise newly-learnt information on the same day it is taught. It helps children understand subject concepts better and boost their memory power. While doing revisions, search for online learning materials such as videos and presentations that will help your children understand the topic a lot better.
Actively participate in class
Listen actively in class and ask doubts then and there. Do not hesitate or feel bad about asking doubts in the classroom in front of your peers. They often fear the ridicule of the teachers or their classmates. So, make your children understand that asking questions is also part of their learning. Encourage them to ask what it is they want to know. The first thing you can do is not to discourage them when they ask you questions. Remember: learning starts at home.
Form Study groups
It is a good idea for students to form study groups. Active discussion of study materials and topics helps students understand them and also gain new perspectives. So, advise your children to form study groups with their friends and host them at times. Also, talk to other parents and their teachers for support.
Watch their health
Keep an eye on your children’s health. Make sure they get enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep can affect a person’s ability to learn or concentrate on things. Ensure they are active and consume balanced meals. Also, meditation can aid in improving your child’s concentration.
Have a positive attitude
Teach your children to have a positive attitude. Academics and school can be stressful at times. Dealing with it all will require a good amount of willpower. It is from you that they can develop this skill. Lend them an ear when needed and listen to their problems. Teach them that it is ok to talk about their problems, and make sure they feel comfortable talking to you. Listen without judgment and advice when they need it.
Prepare for what’s ahead
This is most applicable for secondary school students. Students who are in their final term of secondary school (Secondary 4 or Secondary 5 students) need to make wise use of this time to decide what to pursue next and prepare accordingly. Find out what requirements are there for the Junior college or other institutions your child is trying to get into and make a plan to match their criteria.
They need to focus on their L1R5 subjects and frame a strategy to deal with them. It is a good idea to give more attention to compulsory subjects that students are weak in.
Don’t forget to take breaks.
We know that learning can be a long and exerting process. So, if you don’t pace yourselves in the right way, you will not be able to focus properly and give it the attention it requires. Schedule periodic breaks between your study sessions, go out with your friends for coffee or watch an informative short documentary on Netflix or other streaming platforms. As best as you can, avoid gaming. Do go out and enjoy the great outdoors, that is the best remedy for feeling stressed out. Keep everything in moderation, we should remember that a well-balanced life is key to future happiness.
Get help when needed
If your children feel like they can’t keep up with their lessons, or if they need additional help, seek expert help. It is never too late to seek help, especially when help will benefit your children to do better for prolonged periods of time.
Dear Children, here are a few study tips for you.
Prepare in advance
Prep is key. So, even before you start revising, start preparing. Look up all the subjects and their syllabus. Prepare a time chart to follow. Brush up on all your basics and relearn anything you might have forgotten. These small things can make a big difference in your academics. When you listen to your classes after having done all this, you will have a better understanding of the subject concepts.
Track your progress
Keep a journal or record to track your progress regularly. Reevaluating and adapting yourself is the only way you can improve yourself. So make sure to look back and review your actions periodically. Understand where you went wrong and what you did incorrectly. Try to change your plans accordingly and try not to repeat your past mistakes. It can vastly improve your life. Try it out and see for yourself.
Set goals
Set short-term goals and work hard to achieve them. Completing set goals has the added benefit of boosting your morale and thus making you perform better. Do remember that “little drops of water make a mighty ocean!”
We hope these points help you step up your study game and get better grades in the exams to come. Wishing you all the best ~ stay strong, stay positive! 🙂
