Motivation allows one to focus on the task at hand and move past all the distractions and temptations. It is something that can help you excel in academics and any other field you are working on. And yet, it is something that is so hard to come by for most students. Most students lose motivation when faced with the intense requirements and demands of the present education system.
The world has changed so much. The expectations weighing on students have become so large many are plagued by issues like depression. So, despite all these, how can you instil motivation in the children to work hard?
Communicate effectively
There might be specific as well as different reasons why each student might be facing a lack of motivation. In order to tackle the issue, you need to first identify what is affecting them. The best way to do that is to talk to the children directly. Ask them about their goals and interests. Make sure they understand that you want to help them with their issues and are genuinely willing to listen to them. Encourage them to open up but do not push them. Let them take their own time. Once you get to the issue, see what you can do about it and discuss with them what measures need to be taken.
Reward them for improvement
Make sure you reward the children when they make improvements, no matter how small they seem. It will motivate them to improve further. Positive reinforcement works. Even if it is slow, it is better in the long run.
Hold back punishments
Don’t go about giving punishments for even the smallest of matters. Each time any child makes a mistake, take some time to analyse it and talk to them about what they did wrong. Make sure they reflect on their actions and see what they did wrong. If punishments have to be done, never resort to physical punishments. Use alternatives like time-outs or taking away their privileges like their screen time. But , do be reasonable and make sure to use it only when necessary.
Identify and work according to their pace
If you are in a classroom, there might be children who learn as soon as the teacher teaches the lesson and there might be children who can only understand it only after going through it multiple times. Different children have different learning paces. You can’t expect everyone to learn at the same speed. Spend some time to understand the learning pace and level of understanding for each child, and work accordingly.
Break down their goals into smaller goals
One of the reasons why someone might lose motivation is due to the unreasonable expectations and goals they set for themselves. Instead of focussing on the larger goal and despairing, help the children to break down the large goal into smaller steps and work towards it. The children will be able to see progression more easily and achieving each step will give them the motivation to work towards the next.

Create a good learning environment
Create a positive learning environment for the children. Whether you are a parent or a teacher, make sure the children have an environment where they are not disturbed and where all the doubts and questions are welcome. Make sure they have everything they need. Decorate their learning areas or classrooms. You can hang motivational quotes or their list of goals on the wall for them to see easily.
Encourage asking questions
Children are curious by nature. Young children don’t hold back their questions and will ask till they get answers that satisfy them. Once they start growing older, they slowly start withholding their questions. It is mostly the fault of the adults around them. Many ridicule or feel irritated when children keep asking them questions. Slowly children start feeling hesitant to voice the doubts inside them in fear of sounding stupid or offending others. Be responsible adults and encourage the children to ask questions and answer any they can. If you don’t know the answer, tell them that and work with them to find the answers.
Give them more responsibility
Giving more responsibility to students can make them feel important and have a motivating effect on them. Let them take ownership of their learning and entrust them to plan out their study schedule. This will instil a sense of ownership in them, as they strive to do their best to achieve their potential.
Promote healthy competition
Encourage competition between friends and between classmates on who can perform well or who can improve more than others. Make sure the competition remains healthy and doesn’t get out of hand. It can bring about more motivation in children to work hard than anything else.
Understand why they are learning
Make sure the children have a good idea of why they are learning. And help them understand how much influence it will have on their future.
Encourage them to rethink and reflect
Encourage your children to rethink their strategies and reflect on their actions. If they failed at something, help them identify what the cause was and help them move forward.
Once you can get a student to be motivated and help them work towards their goals, you’ll also have to follow through to make sure they don’t falter and lose it all midway. Offer a little bit of encouragement and keep a watchful eye all the time. We wish you all the best! 🙂
