“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.”
For any country, the day of its independence is a day of utmost happiness, joy, and pride. For US citizens, the Fourth of July can be one of the most important events in the year. On this occasion celebrating freedom and independence, let us take a look at what it is all about. And at the same time, let us see how we can help develop independence and self-reliance in our children.
History
American Independence Day is the day the people of the US commemorate the adoption of its Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, officially ending the British rule of the original colonies and coming together as one nation.
Independence Day is an occasion for every citizen to look back at their country’s achievements, be proud of them, and take a pledge to work together for a bright future ahead. Today the date is celebrated with parades, concerts of patriotic music, barbeques, and fireworks displays. Many often spend the day with family and friends, away from all the worries and enjoying the sweet freedom and independence they possess.
What does it mean to be independent?
Independence doesn’t mean that you can do whatever you like. Independence is the freedom to do things as you like and be responsible for them. It doesn’t come without any price. The freedom we enjoy today was hard-earned by the struggles and sacrifices of many, and we should cherish and respect it. This freedom lets you be whatever and whoever you want to be without limiting you by others’ wishes. So, make sure you try to make the most out of it all while respecting the freedom and independence of others too. Being independent means you can stand up for yourself and also for others, being able to make decisions without having to ask for guidance or asking others to make it for you. An independent person will be able to face the challenges of life, whatever they may be, and stand tall. But it doesn’t mean isolating yourself and alienating people. Independence should also nurture harmony and good relationships. Such is the concept of independence and freedom you need to nurture in your children.
How to help your children to be independent?
- Start with small steps. Teach them to make their beds after they wake up. Teach them how to brush their teeth or get ready on their own.
- Talk to them and understand their needs. Give them an assurance that you will be with them at every walk of their lives.
- Motivate and empower your kids. Make them feel that they can do anything they put their minds on. Start by setting realistic goals they can achieve. By completing them, their confidence will get boosted.
- Reward good behaviour and teach them delayed gratification. It can help develop self-discipline.
- Teach them how to budget and save money
- Teach them how to create a schedule and stick to it.
- Let them go to shops and get stuff on their own.
- Teach them life skills that can help them take care of their needs. You can teach them to cook, make repairs at home, mend their clothes and whatever else you might think will come in handy.
- Teach your children to be accountable and take responsibility for their actions.
- Teach them how to think critically. It is something that will help them make intelligent decisions and help them rely on their mind to make life decisions. It will also help them not be fooled by things and the people around them.
- Make sure your child knows how to use public transport and navigate on their own. Teach them different travel routes – bus and train routes, timings, and directions to frequently visited locations. When you travel with them, let them use the map and guide you.
- Teach them to take care of themselves. They should be able to complete tasks on their own even without the guidance of an elder at home. At the same time, make sure that they know to reach out for help when in need.
- Teach them how to dress up and get ready for an occasion and interact with people.
- Teach them proper etiquette – table manners, how to talk on the phone, and how to behave in social situations. Teaching it to them can lead to your children being more confident and well-behaved.
Most importantly, show them by example. Show them how you do things on your own and take care of yourself. It will be the best way for them to learn.
We hope these pointers are helpful to you. Wishing one and all a happy 4th of July! 🙂
