“Don’t be embarrassed by your failures. Learn from them and start again.” – Sir Richard Branson
Now, how many of us love to chit-chat with our friends? That’s right! Most of us do! But is our usual chit-chat good enough to help us score good grades for the upcoming PSLE Oral Examinations?
Effective communication isn’t a skill that is acquired overnight. Ask any successful speaker or anyone in your circle who converses well on how they acquired this skill? You’re going to listen to these replies – “It took me years of practice to master this skill”, “I used to read a lot of books”, “I used to give speeches to a large audience” and so on.
If you pay close attention to their replies, you will notice the one single factor that contributed to building their communication skills is “Practice”.
Don’t be afraid
Since we acknowledge that practice is a huge part of being a successful speaker, we need to understand now, what the ultimate goal of conversing is. Well, it is to deliver a message and to make sure that the receiver understands exactly what you mean. Is there a need to speak perfect English with the right grammar and vocabulary? Well, yes and no. We endeavour to speak accurately most of the time. However, we also need to remember that it is fine to make occasional mistakes; even native English speakers make them! So, when you start conversing with others in English, don’t overthink! Go with the flow. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, most importantly, just be yourself!
Practice
As mentioned earlier, communication skills can be developed only through constant practice. Always be on the watch for opportunities to test out your spoken English. Interact with your friends and school teachers with whom you feel completely comfortable with. Get feedback from them on the ways that you can improve and try working towards honing your conversation skills.
Listen
Well, if you haven’t heard of this tip yet, listening to others does help build your communication skills. The more you pay attention to what others say, the easier it will be for you to speak better English. You will learn how you can give your opinions and build conversations effectively in English.
Make use of several podcast platforms to follow and listen to meaningful audio channels. These audio-only platforms help you enhance your listening skills and will surely help you improve your communication skills.
Books and Movies
Get started with reading simple and short comics. When you read comics, make sure you start “reading out loud” at first. It improves your vocabulary and pronunciation. Similarly, start with animation movies or movies that are simple to follow. This will help you build your conversing skills as you get to know how people interact with each other and their body language. Body language is key to communication. This can be learnt only by checking out movies and also practising it in real-time. Talking about perfect communication, it is the perfect sync of better words that are said and the manner in which it is said. You can master these skills by watching a lot of movies. As stated earlier, start with easy to follow movies and then move on to complicated subjects.
Be it persons who are entirely new to English or those who already have a general idea on how to interact well, the above-mentioned tips will help them converse better. Here are three more tips that will help you take your conversing skills to the next level –
Think in English
What do most of us do? When someone asks us a question in English, we try translating it to our native language, think about our reply in the Native Language itself, translate it back to English and only then, speak it out. Try developing the habit of “thinking in English”. Yes, it will be difficult at first, but then if you want to build excellent conversing skills, this is the right way to go about it.
Interact with yourself
Sounds funny, right?
When you talk to yourself in English in front of the mirror, you will learn when and how to use the language perfectly. Try practising this technique daily for 5-10 minutes and you’ll learn where you lack and make most of the mistakes.
Tongue Twisters
“Fred fed Ted bread, and Ted fed Fred bread.”
Try reading this sentence quickly for about 4-5 times.
Tongue twisters help in improving your pronunciation and fluency skills. They even help improve your accent. Make sure you work on tongue twisters as it will help you sound clear when speaking.
All the above-mentioned tips and tricks will help you converse better. Make use of these techniques and power up your conversation skills!
Do remember that “No matter how good you get, you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part!” 🙂
