During the last two weeks of term 2 most of the schools in Singapore were shut down recently over fears of a new variant of COVID-19 spreading rapidly.
Even one year after its start, the pandemic continues to infect more and more people all over the world. According to the latest reports, children are getting infected in large numbers. Parents are worried out of limits in this tense situation, and the Ministry of Health has called for parents to start registering their children, ages 12 to 18 years of age, for the Covid-19 vaccination.
Right now, you might be looking for ways to shield your children from this disease. But, there are things that you can do to help boost their immunity which in turn ensures that they have a better chance of not getting infected, or if they do, to fight it off.
Food and Diet
A good diet is vital for the immune system to function well. It ensures that the body receives essential nutrients and substances to be healthy. To ensure that your children get these, here are something to keep in mind:
- Try to reduce intake of already processed or store-bought food. Try preparing meals fresh and include different nutrients in their diet.
- Ensure that children eat what you give them. Children are picky eaters by choice and often leave things like vegetables out of their food. Try to get your children to eat those too by explaining the importance of each vegetable, from a nutrient standpoint.
- Include nuts, seeds, and whole grains in their meals. They contain many nutrients that boost your child’s immunity.
- If your children are reluctant to eat fruits and vegetables, try mashing them or making them into pastes and mixing them in dishes so that they don’t pick them off.
- Include meat- both poultry and red meat in your child’s diet as they are rich sources of protein.
- Try to reduce sugar and oily foods.
- Probiotics are also a good addition to their diet. They help in replenishing the good bacteria in your stomach.
- Get them to drink plenty of water.
Many parents resort to supplements for their children’s nutritional requirements. But, it is better to try out a balanced diet than to rely on supplements.
Personal Hygiene
It is important to practice personal hygiene.
- Teach your children to keep themselves and their surroundings clean. A clean and hygienic living environment is vital to reduce the chances of one developing a disease.
- Make them wash their hands regularly and use masks and protection when they step out. You should also practice this so that you do not transmit anything to your children.
- If they get any cuts or bruises, properly disinfect them and cover them properly so that they are not infected.
Exercise
When children have to stay at home during the lockdowns, they have to stay indoors all the time. Kids no longer can go outside and play with their friends. The amount of physical effort they do in a day has reduced. Kids need to be active to be healthy. So, if they cannot go outside to play or exercise, make sure they do some exercise inside. Try teaching them and yourself yoga or indoor exercise that can help them stay healthy. It can also help improve your mood and relieve stress.
Sleep schedule
If children do not get enough sleep, it can adversely affect their immune system. Sleep is the time when the body recuperates. Not having enough sleep has been found to cause diabetes and other illnesses in the long run. Make sure your children follow a proper sleep schedule and get enough sleep
Mental health is important too
Parents often pay attention to the physical health of their children but neglect their mental health.
Stress and depression can weaken your immune system. The pandemic situation has been a time of stress and mental fatigue for many. Even children are not free from it. Being confined to their homes and not being able to go to school, they feel locked up. They do not even get to spend time with their friends. They will be stressed out or worried. So, try not to create a hostile or toxic home environment for your children. Make sure you do not take out your frustrations on them. Be kind and understanding. Talk to them about their worries and answer any doubts they might have. Make sure they understand that you are there for them in every situation.
Parents are probably scared out of their minds now. It is natural to feel that way. But instead of staying worried, you can act on these tips and help your children fight against getting infected. Even if they are infected by some means, having a healthy immune system will help them fight it off and recover fast from it. It would be best to get yourself and also your children vaccinated as soon as possible. It is the best way to boost your immunity against Covid.
Try out these and stay home – stay safe. Let’s join our hands together in this battle against COVID and soon we will be able to get back to the lifestyle that we are most fond of!
