How to Plan Your Child’s Time: A Guide for Parents | 88tuition

If there are two important traits we need to develop in our children, it should be patience and the knack of managing time effectively.

Gone are the days when all a child had to keep track of were study and playtimes. Today, students not only have their academic performance to keep track of; but several other extracurricular activities they may be involved in. being able to manage their time and dividing it effectively to complete all the tasks they have to do can be daunting. In this situation, a proper schedule can help your children be worry-free and make their lives go smoother.

So, as parents, how can you better help to plan and manage your child’s time?

Interaction is key

Understand what they want to do and what they want to prioritise. Prepare a schedule based on your discussion with them. Talk to them about the importance of time management. They might want more time to play and less time doing all the tasks they might consider boring. Don’t get angry with them or decide on things arbitrarily. Talk to your children with love, and be reasonable. Tell them why you want them to be better at utilising their time and advise them on what to do.

Know your children better

You must understand what their strengths and weaknesses are. When planning their schedule or daily tasks you will need this information. You must identify which tasks your child struggles to complete and which they find easy or look forward to. Effectively arranging and allotting time for these will be key to ensuring your child’s time is properly utilised.

Set Goals

Set goals and time limits for each of them. Reward your children for achieving them. Make sure these goals are realistic and achievable. Achieving your goals can be motivating and help encourage them to become more efficient.

Create a routine

A routine is the best way to ensure that your children are utilising their time effectively. It will help create habits that will help them throughout their lives. Help your children create a routine and follow it. Sit down with them and take inputs while framing it. Allot enough time for activities they want to do.

Don’t be too ambitious

Your children will definitely feel burnout if their schedules are packed with so many things. So, limit the things they have to do and give them room to breathe. Make sure there are breaks between every study or practice session. Include time for them to go out and play with friends.

Plan for the unexpected

When you plan a schedule or routine, include time for some unexpected event or activity so that if one occurs they won’t have to rush to complete their other tasks.

Stay organised

Keep everything your children might need in easy-to-find places. Make sure their rooms and study places are in order. It will help avoid wasting time looking for things they need. Train them to make it a habit to keep everything ordered and in place.

Note it down

When you make a timetable or schedule, note it down and display it somewhere easily visible. Also, make it a habit to note down the tasks your children have to do. It can save time by reminding them what all is left.

Define your priorities

When deciding on what tasks to spend time on, assign priorities to each one of them and choose those with the highest priority to do first. This way even if your children aren’t able to complete all the tasks, the most important ones will get completed.

Limit screen time

Increased screen time is one of the reasons for children wasting their time. Set time limits for gadget usage and set designated areas at home where they are not allowed. Also, make it a habit to stop their usage at least one hour before sleep time.

Proper sleep schedule

Make sure your children keep to a regular sleeping schedule. It will help make sure they are not tired during the day and keep them mentally and physically healthy. Lack of sleep will slow down your children and might affect their health if left unchecked.

Healthy body and mind

Make sure they exercise and have a balanced meal. Being sick can ruin all their schedules and plans. It will also ensure that they have enough energy to efficiently complete all their tasks and schedules. Meditation and visualisation techniques are proven to help better plan people’s days and help achieve daily goals. Try them out and see if they help your children.

Ask for help when required

Tell your children to ask for help if they feel stuck or need help with something. Instead of wasting time without any effect, it is better to reach out to someone to ask them for help.

Assess and adapt

Review what works and what does not and adapt accordingly. You might not start with the best plan suited for your children. But by continuous review and changes, you’ll slowly reach there.
