“Oh, I miss my school days, those were the best times!” How many of us are guilty of having such wistful thoughts? The truth is, to us (slightly more mature folks), our school days will always be the best days of our lives, stress-free, carefree, with the only requirement for us to perform well in our academics. However, the same cannot be said for the current generation of school-going children, who face a minimum six-hour school day, together with extra activities after school, and all the tuition that they have been signed up for. Being a child today definitely has its challenges as well.
Long gone are the days when children could come back home and play hopscotch or catching with their neighbours at the void deck of their HDB flats. Instead, the homework load in schools now can force students to stay up late into the wee hours of the night just to ensure that it is completed. There are recent changes (such as taking away Mid-Year Examinations for some levels) made to ensure that students do not feel as much pressure in their academics. However, is that all that is necessary to ease the stress? Can we ease the burden without compromising on the quality on grades? Let’s take a look at how we can achieve a good balance of both good grades, and a healthy state of mind
Becoming a good student
Now let’s get down to the most important part. How can you increase your efficiency at school? A start would be by attending classes without fail. Mere attendance, however wouldn’t do. Let me ask something to every student reading this. Why do you attend classes? Is your role in class supposed to be that of a mute spectator? The classroom is the place to gain clarity regarding concepts. It is where you should interact with the teacher, clarify your doubts without the least bit of inhibition and ensure that you have a clear idea about what you are learning. Taking a cursory glance at what is going to be discussed in the upcoming classes is advised. Never move forward without a proper understanding of any concept. At the end of the day, concepts are always linked to each other, hence, grasping a concept well will only benefit you in the long run. Never hesitate to go beyond your textbooks, the thirst for knowledge is only going to do you good.
How to not forget?
The fact is that we are all humans beings. We can never store everything that we read into our brains for eternity. So instead of focusing on how to not forget, let us focus on how to remember better. Write down the important points. When you learn a new topic, revise it on the very same day with the notes that you have taken down. Revise it again after a few days. Do the same after a week, then after two weeks and so on. Revision is your best friend. With time, it would turn into an effortless routine.
Organisation and time management
Have everything under your control. From your study table to your notebooks ensure that everything is in order. Ensure continuity and consistency in your note-making. Make a calendar for your homework and assignments and make sure you finish them in advance to avoid anxiety. Forming home work groups of 3-4 friends is a good idea, you will be able to motivate and help each other through the challenging assignments.
Burning the midnight oil may sound heroic but time and again, ‘smart work’ is what proves immensely effective. The few tips discussed above can provide amazing results provided that you follow them with discipline. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s start doing the best we can in our homework assignments by making use of these tips.
