Within a couple of months, our Instagram and Twitter hashtags have changed from #ChineseNewYearCelebration to #StayHome and #StaySafe. As we all know by now, coronavirus has changed the way we lead our day-to-day lives. In a few countries, things are slowly getting back to normal. However, in most nations, the virus is spreading rapidly at an exponential rate and a nation-wide lockdown has been called for.
So, how are things going on your end? What has been your routine for the past few days? Are you binge-watching your favourite series? Have you planned an effective schedule for the coming weeks?
Have you ever thought about how others are dealing with the status quo? Circuit breaker measures have kicked in across the nation and the great majority of Singaporeans have been asked to stay at home for about a month. The days of the COVID-19 pandemic are really testing ones. The ongoing circuit breaker measures have the potential to help us tide over this pandemic.
Spare a thought for others
Many of us might have already planned it all out, how we are going to spend the next few weeks. However, there are those in our midst who do not have the luxury to plan out a one-month period in which they will not be able to go to work.
The government has indeed rolled out efficient measures to ensure that no one gets left out during these troubling times. But still, many are forced to put up with inconveniences and a certain amount of economic hardship. Is there something that we can do about this?
Time to give back
It is the times of crisis which bring out the real heroes. There is a lot that we can do to reach out to the community in the wake of this crisis. Indeed, it is our responsibility to explore such options today. While you stay indoors, put your heads together for a while and try to think of ways in which you can help out, without compromising on the circuit breaker measures. You could also sign up to help the people who have already rolled out some creative solutions. Let’s take a look at a few of these initiatives which are spreading a few lovely smiles while we are filled with a great crisis.
The tales of love
Protective masks are one of the most essential items during this period. Did you come across ‘Masks Sewn With Love’ on social media? The initiative was launched to provide Singaporeans with masks that can protect them from the spread of the coronavirus. So, what’s so unique about it? It seeks to utilise the help of community members in the production process. An online tutorial video is provided to help people learn how to sew masks on their own. Those willing to be a part of this initiative can sew masks in their homes and supply them. The aim is to supply at least 50,000 masks over the next four weeks to those who have not been able to get hold of masks due to various reasons. The call has received a great response from multiple corners with even school-going students joining in and putting the sewing skills to use for the betterment of the community.
How has the shift to online learning been? The circuit breaker measures have ensured that learning has been transferred to the online medium. However, many students do not have gadgets to access this. ‘Engineering Good’ aims to help out these students. With the backing of a group of national athletes who hope to make a difference in the lives of those students in need, the non-profit organisation has been doing exceptional work. They collect gadgets that can be used for online learning from willing contributors, reformat and refurbish them before handing them out to those in need.
A few days ago, a group of our musicians came up with a beautiful remake of Singapore’s well-loved national day song, “Count on Me, Singapore”. “Stay At Home, Singapore” reminds everyone to contribute towards the nation’s efforts at combating COVID-19. The group that rolled out this remake is also raising funds for the ST School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF) and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BTBAF). This can make a significant difference in the lives of a good number of people who are in need of help during these times.
So, feel like doing something? Wish to join in with some of these efforts? Don’t hesitate! This is your chance. Some Singaporeans are choosing to do their part for charity by donating their solidarity budget handouts to charity. For the rest of us, let’s sign up and join the resistance. There’s a lot that each one of us can do, even within the four walls of our homes. Let us spread love with our actions and give each other the hope and strength to overcome this unprecedented crisis. Let’s work together as a family and come out successful! 🙂
