In the blink of an eye, the March holidays have come, and they will be gone soon. On March 22, our kids are all set to begin their Term 2 for this academic year. So, try reading the expressions on your young one’s face when you speak to her about this. Do you spot excitement? Or is it a look of concern? How do you think they feel about the coming term?
But wait, it’s not just the kids. It’s never just the kids! Parents and educators across the nation are also looking towards Term 2 with a bag of different feelings, considering multiple factors regarding the education of our students.
So, what are the things that need to be kept in mind as we move into Term 2? We have prepared a few disclaimers regarding the things that you need to be keeping an eye on as we head into the new term.
The Golden Rule
Pay close attention guys. Focus! Here is rule number 1 aka (also known as) the golden rule that you need to follow heading into the next term. Now, some of you might already be following this rule – that’s great. But, there might be many who have not yet begun implementing this rule or realised its significance.
The rule – just chill a bit.
Now, no we are not asking you to don those party clothes and go into vacation mode. But we are asking you, all of you – students, parents, and educators – to relax a bit, to reduce the burden of stress that you take upon yourself. The past year has heightened stress levels and anxiety across the globe. This means that we all need to focus more on self-care and the care of our loved ones. Devote some time towards activities such as yoga and meditation. Ensuring that you are in the best mental framework is key to any strategy, regardless of other factors.
A chance for introspection and evaluation
Now, we have completed a term of this academic year and are moving into the second one. Before Term 1 began, many of us might have set up targets for the term and/or the entire academic year. There would have been academic targets as well as plans crafted for non-curricular activities including CCAs.
Now that you are entering into Term 2, it would be worthwhile to evaluate your performance in Term 1 and reflect on how you can improve your academic grades.
Students need to conduct objective assessments of their performances during the past term. For this, the oversight of parents can be helpful. Sit with your kids, free yourselves from distractions and help your kids make sense of the term that has gone by.
The academic aspects can be evaluated using the scores of any tests that the students have taken (if they are available). Students can also take a cursory glance at the topics that they were taught and think about which ones they find more challenging. With the help of their parents, they can try to figure out how best to improve their content knowledge and practice more to become stronger in their weaker topics. The same analysis can also be done for CCAs and non-curricular activities. Analyse strengths and weaknesses in an objective manner, and compare the results with the targets that had been set at the beginning of the year. This is the best way to reflect and decide on the best course of action to improve standards holistically.
Eyes set on the future
Chill, evaluate, and then orient your vision towards the future. What lays ahead is an exciting new term and the lion’s share of the academic year. Some of you might be sitting for the PSLE and other important exams this year. As you move into Term 2, start focusing more on your exams. Practice mock questions and make revision a habit. Have a vision and make time for other activities such as CCAs. Make suitable modifications to the study plans that you had devised before, guided by any changed reality that emerged during the past term. Make sure that the targets you set for this term are reasonable and put your heart into achieving them.
Don’t let the past devour you
Keep one thing in mind as you move forward. For many of you, Term 1 might have been a really productive period where you succeeded in completing all or most of what you had set out to do. But for some of you, Term 1 might not have gone according to plan. Those who fall into the latter category, understand that all that has happened is a thing of the past. They are now out of your control. Look forward to the things that you can control (at least up to a certain extent). Focus on putting in your 100% in the upcoming term.
So guys, brace yourselves for a fun ride. It’s going to be challenging, but it’s also going to be exciting. Do your work diligently and enjoy the curricular and non-curricular aspects of the upcoming term. Believe that in this term, you will enhance your abilities, and enjoy the process. Let’s welcome Term 2 with open arms, open hearts, and open minds! Term 2, here we come! 🙂
