“Don’t stress, do your best!” How many times have we been hearing such examination mantras in the recent weeks? Yes, it seems never ending, but the end is indeed near. The pressure is building, and tense moments are aplenty.
It is definitely a challenging period and your kids can end up tremendously stressed due to their exams. This may not be effective once the amount of pressure crosses a manageable threshold. As a result, stress can sabotage the entire process. Kids can feel unduly stressed out due to the fear of scoring badly (or rather, less than the ideal grades expected) during the exams. However, this stress can only further deteriorate their prospects. How then, do we get our kids out of this stressful mindset?
Stress can surely be misplaced
One of the important things to remember about stress is that more often than not, it is misplaced. Many students have already put in the hard work prior to the examinations. However, due to unnecessary stress and seeing how their peers may be better prepared than them, they feel the unnecessary pressure on them. Or they could be just looking at the stacks of worksheets on their table, and feel that they might have left out an important piece of information, or even possibly, forgotten what they had learnt about previously. This should not happen at all!
You need to tell them
People (or in this case, students) who are stressed out for no reason rarely realise that they are stressed out. So what is the solution to reducing their stress levels? Someone else needs to tell them. Any guesses about who that should be? That’s right – parents! This brings us to one of the primary responsibilities of parents during their kids’ examinations.
Parents and guardians, you have just got to be there for your kids during the time of their exams! Take that as an inviolable rule.
Spend a bit more time for your kids. But there is a disclaimer – don’t stress yourself out and don’t do anything that would add to their stress. Listen to your kids. Help them vent out any undue stress. Speak to them and reassure them. Make them recognise their efforts and that it is futile to get stressed.
Put a limit to how much time is spent studying
Yes, you read it right! Studying too much near the examination and neglecting other basic needs can do a lot more harm than good. There is a limit to everything. The best thing to do nearer to the exams is rapid revision. You can try taking some mock tests as well. Don’t try learning some new concept hours before the exam if you are prone to getting stressed out. Realise the fact that your body and mind require timely breaks. In between your revision, find moments to go out and breathe in some fresh air.
You need to sleep and eat
So this is a two-way relationship here. Students who are stressed out can end up skipping their meals and sleep. On the other hand, skipping meals and sleep due to overzealous studying can lead to a heightened amount of stress.
The rule is simple – ensure that your child gets an adequate amount of sleep and ensure that meals are not skipped. Follow a healthy diet during the exam season and don’t take too many risks in this regard.
Stay positive and ace those tests
At the end of the day, we have just got to tell our kids to trust their abilities and stay positive. You don’t want them to be thinking negative thoughts and questioning their examination preparation efforts. Yes, the examinations are challenges that all students will have to face, but our kids are good enough to excel in these learning assessments. Convincing them of this fact is key to de-stressing them.
Let’s stay positive, help our kids stay positive and help them ace the exams with ease. All the best! 🙂
