More effort = greater result. True? Not always! Most of us would have come across situations where the effort we would have put in for a particular task might not have fetched us the desired results we expected. This scenario can happen for absolutely anyone and at different instances – be it workplace, or at school. The general misconception that most people have is that – “Better the effort, better the end result needs to be!” At the same time, we have also learnt that smart work has a higher chance of leading to better results.
Academic excellence of children occupies an important position in the minds of Singaporean parents. Having one of the best education systems in the world, we take pride in the academic performance of our students. Given the importance that we place on education, it can be incredibly challenging and frustrating when students fail to perform. Furthermore, it can be extremely frustrating for parents when their children score less even after they put in utmost effort in learning for the exams.
So, how can we handle this situation?
As parents, we need to pay more attention and identify what the underlying cause is and try to mitigate it at the earliest. Let us look at how you can help your children get the apt results for the effort they put in and what might be some of the factors hindering their performance.
Rethink the way you learn
The main reason your children might be failing to deliver great results even after putting in a lot of effort might be due to the way they learn. There are, of course, right and wrong ways to learn. Employing the most suitable way for you is how you can get the most out of your efforts.
Every person is unique and hence the way of learning tends to differ. It depends on what type of learning your child is most suited for. There are some basic strategies you can apply to help your children discover the best way for them to learn. The VARK method is one such technique. It was developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming. According to Fleming, there are 4 types of learners:
- Visual Learners
- Auditory Learners
- Reading/Writing Learners
- Kinaesthetic Learners (Those who learn from experience)
Identify which learning style best matches your children’s needs and follow it religiously.
Periodic assessments
Make sure you encourage your children to do periodic assessments and assess their understanding of individual subject concepts. It can help you make a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the effort your children are putting in and help you make decisions on what to do to help them.
Review and Adapt
From the assessments, you’ll be able to gain more insights into what your child’s strengths and weaknesses are and what they need to concentrate more on. Periodic review and actions based on that will help your children make steady improvements.
Stress and Anxiety
Another reason children fail to produce results even after putting in lots of effort might be stress and anxiety. Children who suffer from exam anxiety fail to answer even the questions they know the answers to. The stress and anxiety can cause your children to forget the answers or make it difficult for them to translate their learnings into words for the exams. Such situations can be encountered by practice and offering motivation to them. In case the issue is severe, it would be wise to get help from a child mental health expert. They will be able to talk to your children and gain a better understanding of the cause and find an optimal solution. The best thing you can do is to encourage your children and assure them that you’ll have their back no matter what the result of their performance is.
Make the best use of the time available
Another reason why your children might fail to get the results they yearn for can be because they didn’t start working at the right time. If you are spending hours on your studies only a week before the exam, the chances of you securing good grades is low. The effort pays off when it is consistent. So, make sure your children put in incremental effort on a daily basis. Do not wait until the last moment to look up things to learn. If you do that, the chances are you’ll forget most of what you learn at the last minute.
Health and Sleep
Sleep deprivation during the exam week and following an unhealthy daily routine can cause your children to perform badly in their exams. So make sure they get enough sleep; especially during exam times. It can be the decisive factor that determines how your children fare in the exam. Also, make sure they follow a balanced diet and take sufficient rest and do daily exercise. These can help boost your child’s memory and cognitive skills.
Work on basics
No matter how much effort you put in, if you don’t have a good grasp on the foundation and basics of different subjects, the chances are you’ll fail to fully understand the complex topics that will come up in the subsequent lessons. So, make sure to use the time you might have to brush up on your basics and have a stronghold over them.
Hope the above-mentioned points help your children perform their tasks well and reap out the desired results that they and you wished for. All the best! 🙂
