During the year-end season, a glance across various newspapers would see us reading articles bidding the year 2020 goodbye, in a rather gleeful tone (for most of these articles). Yes, the year 2020 has not been the most memorable for many of us, all thanks to Covid-19. But, let’s not let the pandemic get to us. Let’s look ahead, and cheer for the new year 2021 that is right around the corner.
Many school-going kids and their parents are getting all set for the new academic year again. For some, there will be new schools, a new environment, new friends. For others, the new year brings about a new set of challenges, not just academically. Being a year older, hopefully the kids are wiser as well. So, are you excited about it? Are you concerned about it? What do you look forward to this school year for your kid and yourself?
Let’s just keep a few things in mind while we embark on this new journey.
A year of opportunity
Things don’t always work out as we plan. But things tend to work out a lot better when you breathe some positivity into yourself. Parents need to help their kids see the upcoming year as one with opportunity and not one filled with challenges or hurdles. The subjects in the new academic level are not to be seen as hard or difficult, they are an opportunity to learn more and enhance one’s intellect. The exams are not threats but opportunities to score big and enjoy success. The selections to the school sports or cultural teams are opportunities to excel at and improve one’s skills.
Standing up against bullying
Now, this is something that all of us need to focus on. There is nothing funny about bullying. Parents, you need to sit your kids down for this conversation. What we need to do here is ensure that if our kids are faced with any form of bullying at school, including cyberbullying, they must at least be able to share that with parents. Establish a strong line of contact with your kid so that if she or any of her friends or classmates get bullied, you as a parent get to know about it. Parents must ensure that issues of bullying are taken up by the appropriate authorities at school.
Let’s focus on ensuring that our kids stand up against bullying.
The New Year resolutions
The new year is the time for resolutions. What happens to these resolutions? Well, in many cases they end up getting broken within a day or a week. It’s time to change that now. Let us let you into a secret, believe it or not, it is possible to keep up your personal resolutions.
Take a pledge to be regular, disciplined, and efficient in studies for the entire academic year.
Charting the course – identification, planning, and execution
The year full of opportunity needs a proper amount of planning to be leveraged to your benefit. The first step is identification. Figure out what you wish to prioritize this year. The things on your list could include acing the PSLE, making it to the CCA (co-curricular activity) of your choice, giving extra attention to a subject that you are weak in, etc. Identify the things that you want to do as well as the things that you must put aside time to do. Come to terms with your strengths as well as weaknesses, and work them to your advantage.
Now once you have got that done, what is the next step? You chart out the plan. Now, this can be best done when it is a team effort involving both parents and kids. Your plan will depend upon what you have identified as your priorities, strengths, and weaknesses. While planning layout a few specifics about different issues as well. For example, if you can decide on opting for tuitions for the subjects that you are weak, then try to identify the best tuition centres around you, check out the online options and the benefits of the same, speak to your acquaintances who faced the same predicament of having to choose tuition institutes before and using all this groundwork figure out where you will be joining without much delay.
Get those sleep cycles right
Kids need to get an adequate amount of sleep. During the holidays, a lot of our kids might have messed up their sleep cycles, going to bed later than usual, and waking up later than usual as well. Get those sleep cycles right at least a few days before the schools reopen.
This is going to be an amazing year and you are going to make the most of it. Set your goals, work hard, and enjoy yourself. All the best! 🙂
