Help – I want my A* for Science!

Posted on October 5, 2020October 5, 2020 by 88tuition.com

Calling all Primary Sixes! Yes! We have completed half of our PSLE papers. Hopefully the tips that we had shared previously were useful for you.

So, did we all have a good rest over the weekend? Are we all set to take the PSLE science paper? For those who have butterflies in your stomach, don’t feel afraid – you’re not alone! The science paper can be pretty daunting, at least to some of us. But at the end of the day, with a bit of guidance and self-confidence (and not to mention hard work) you can definitely score a more than a decent grade on the paper. As you cruise through the PSLE season, here are our few words of wisdom that’ll help you gain an A or A* in the PSLE Science paper.

Be present

What is the most important thing while taking your science paper? It’s your presence. What do we mean by that? Well, what we mean to say is that you need to bring in your maximum focus while you are inside the exam hall. Your science paper is never about rote memorization. You will need to apply the concepts that you have learned. In order to do that, the first thing that you need is a calm and attentive mind. If you feel stressed out inside the exam hall, pause for a while. Take a few deep breaths and calm yourself before you set out to answer the question paper.

Read and re-read

Before attempting a question, what is the basic requirement that you need? Yes! You need to understand a question before attempting to answer it. This becomes all the more important when it comes to your PSLE science paper. Don’t rush through the part where you actually read the questions. Take a look at the question. Read it once. Read it again in a calm manner. Make sure that you have understood the question clearly. Then recall the relevant information related to the question that you should use to get to the answer. For Multiple Choice Questions, take a look at all the given options in a calm manner before you opt for one. Do this even if you are absolutely sure about the answer. As best as you can, avoid being too overconfident about the answers because the simpler the questions seem, the trickier they actually are.

Getting through the open-ended questions

Now, the open-ended questions which account for 44 marks in the PSLE Science paper might appear as a concern for students (as well as parents). Should you really fear this section?

It is definitely an important section of the paper and can make or break your overall performance. But, let’s just examine the facts of this matter.

The questions in this section will be a tad different than the other questions. But what will be asked? Definitely questions that you have studied about and the trick will be how you can apply that knowledge and infer certain facts based on that knowledge. So, at the end of the day, you are not going to be faced with questions that are unrelated to what you have learned.

Secondly, how do you go about answering these questions?

Structure your answer

What if you know everything related to the subject but unable to put down on the paper what is relevant? You don’t want to end up in such a predicament and lose your valuable marks. So, what is the next step? Structure the answer in your mind. Now, this requires some sort of mental recollection and filtering. You have studied the relevant topics. Now, all that is left is for you to bring to your mind all that information and use your reasoning skills to filter out the unnecessary information. Have a clear mental picture of the answer before you start to express it on your answer sheet.

Use the information provided in the question. Remember that your answer should always be structured in a manner that is reflective of the question that is being asked. Don’t forget to address the requirements of the question and remember the relevant scientific terms in your answers.

Taking the science paper is not going to be a tedious task provided that you keep a cool and calm demeanour. Stay relaxed, stay focused. Remind yourself that you have prepared adequately for this test. Keep in mind the few things that we just discussed.

All the best! 🙂
