Congratulations, Primary Sixes, one paper down – English Language paper is over. Now, let’s focus on Mathematics! Yes, ‘The dreadful PSLE Math examination’ – that is how many of us think about the PSLE mathematics examination (or any other math examination for that matter of fact). But, guess what? That doesn’t necessarily has to be the case!
How can we score an A for math? Can we even score an A for math?
Yes, you definitely can (no, we are not joking). As the PSLE math examination is just tomorrow, here are a few (albeit last minute) suggestions that can help you (try to) get that perfect A on your math paper.
Trust yourself
Yes, we have been chanting this repeatedly – Believe in yourself! You simply have to trust your abilities. Believe in yourself (yes, it might be tough when it comes to math, but you’ve just got to). You can never get an A for math unless you first convince yourself that you are perfectly capable of getting one. Do not give up, even before you see the examination paper. Not before, not during, and definitely, not after!
Then, just breathe. You have prepared, prepared hard in fact, for the exam. You have done all the necessary hard work. So what’s stopping you from getting an A? Build up your confidence, believe in yourself!
Taking a look at the questions
Once you get hold of your math question paper, the first thing to remember is to not freak out. Take a look at the questions. Glance through and identify the easier questions. Easier questions seem challenging? No panic – look for the topics that you’re more familiar with! If the exam paper happens to seem more challenging than usual, do not give up! Bear in mind that this is how it usually seems, the paper may seem more difficult than usual. Remember that your peers are with you as well, i.e, it’s not just you that thinks the paper is tough. Pull yourself together and realise that as long as you stay calm, you stand a higher chance of being able to solve the challenging math questions.
Go to the easy ones first
Many students tend to try answering the more difficult questions before they get to the relatively easier ones. This is an extremely detrimental tendency which can do you no good. With math, you can really get stuck with difficult or tricky questions and end up wasting a good amount of time.
Play to your strengths. Go to the easy questions or the ones that you are more familiar with first. You will be able to complete them accurately using the least amount of time.
How does this help you? First of all, it boosts your confidence and makes you feel calmer inside the exam hall. Secondly, it also helps you manage your time efficiently and gives you adequate time to deal with the more difficult questions.
Rapid revision
You can indeed do a bit of quick last-minute maths revision to boost your confidence and preparedness before the day of your PSLE math exam. Then again, this option should be used with caution as some of us tend to freak out a bit more while studying too close to the exams. If you do not belong to this latter category then you can definitely try some rapid revision. Go through the important formulae, attempt a few mock questions and look through past year examination papers. You could subscribe to online revision videos to highlight important concepts. This could come in as a handy option to step up your last-minute revision.
Script the exam day
Whatever the task may be, a great part of our success is dependent on the psychological elements. Be aware of this. So make sure to do all that you can to keep yourself in the best frame of mind on the exam day (read our blog on the ‘Dos and Don’ts on the day before your exams’). Keep yourself adequately and healthily fed. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep on the previous day of the math exam. See to it that you have arranged in advance all the materials that you will need in the examination hall. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water as well.
Getting an A on the math paper is not as daunting a task as we may tend to imagine. With the right effort and confidence, you will surely be able to ace the PSLE math examination with ease.
All the best! 🙂
