Health is Wealth – How many of us have heard of this phrase before? Yes, this is very true especially in times like these, where the Coronavirus threatens to disrupt many spheres of our society. Similarly, let’s not forget that when it comes to our health, habits that we’ve had since young stand a high chance of sticking with us as we grow older. These things will influence the remaining part of our lives. This is easy to understand when we are speaking about even our daily habits, which include waking up early in the morning or keeping our room clean. The early risers have a better chance of staying early risers throughout their lives. Those who kept their rooms clean tend to fare better at maintaining a clean apartment.
So how does this apply to our health? Do you know that your mental make-up during childhood can exert a significant influence on the later years of your life?
What the experts say
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study in the USA for which participants were recruited between 1995 and 1997 is the most eye-opening work on the relationship between negative childhood experiences and their consequences on the health of the person when he/she grows up.
Two and a half decades later, it is well established that childhood stress and other adverse experiences during the period can lead to serious diseases that affect both the mind and body. This includes social impairment, obesity, higher risks of getting addicted to drugs. The expected years of life also see a decrease with these negative health habits
What stresses out youngsters today?
But what really stresses out kids in Singapore? It is time we have serious discussions on this matter. In our nation, the main driver of stress among youngsters is unsurprisingly, academics. The urge to ace every test you take, to score exceptionally well in the PSLE, to make it into a good college program, every part of the education system and its expectations put individuals under a lot of pressure.
There will be expectations at home, within the family and among circles of acquaintances. All this can be a bit too much for a student to bear, especially at a younger age.
Another key reason is peer pressure. You might feel the urge to fit into your peer groups and not be distanced from your friends or classmates. This can also lead to kids pushing themselves unnecessarily which ultimately creates a lot of unwanted stress.
Social media and advanced technology also bring along an increased incidence of stress if not handled properly. You might fall prey to the norms of the virtual world and start forcing yourself to follow the social media trends in order to look cool. But all this does is pile up more stress on your mind.
The factors behind stressful behaviour are plenty. But is there a way out?
Ways to manage stress
The most important thing to do is talk about it. It is perfectly natural to be stressed out. So never feel ashamed if you find the world too tough to handle. You, the student, are in your childhood or youth and most adults today have faced problems similar to what you are facing today. Practicing meditation, breathing exercises, going for casual morning walks and social media detox definitely helps in the cause to manage stress.
Ways to reduce stress:
Parents – our friends
Parents are the best place to go to. They are the best stress-busters for children. As such, we must try to open up and share our issues with our parents and family. Just speaking about things can help take weights off our chest.
Worst case scenario
One of the most common times where we feel stressed is before we are about to undertake a task. This could be something like giving a speech before an audience or taking an all-important exam. In such scenarios, a simple exercise can be useful for some people. Imagine the worst-case scenario. For example, suppose that you are about to give a speech before an audience and are stressed out about it. The worst-case scenario is that you forget your lines or say something that is embarrassing. What happens then? The audience might laugh. People might pass comments on the event for a few days. But what significance does that have? With a bit of time, everyone would stop talking about the incident and it would be as if it never happened. So, the worst-case scenario is not actually that painful. Using this exercise and coming to this realization helps you to reduce stress.
Sleep, eat, play
Spending time on play and exercise can be extremely helpful in reducing stress. Also make sure to get in at least 8-10 hours of sleep everyday. Take your meals on time and control the intake of junk food. Childhood and youth are times to enjoy. Be glad, try out new things, smile, talk and play. Trust when you are told that this youthful period is the best phase of your life. If anything feels wrong don’t hesitate to go to your parents. Let us invest in stress-free early years to create a healthier and happier tomorrow! 😊
