Celebrating Teacher’s Day!
“They inspire you, they entertain you, and you end up learning a ton even when you don’t know it.” – Nicholas Sparks
The above quote easily sums up the positive influence that teachers have on children, whether we realise it.
Teaching is perhaps one of the most influential jobs that exist. We often say that the future of a nation is shaped by its children and teachers are the ones who shape them to unlock their potential. They help formulate a child’s early ideals and the way they think. It is this foundation that helps them fully form the idea of what they want to be in the future. So, it is only natural that we have a day to celebrate and commemorate the efforts and contributions they make.
In Singapore, teacher’s day falls on the last Friday of term 3. This year, it falls on 2nd September. Since it is an official day off in schools, students have time to organise activities to celebrate the special day. Let us look at what we can do to make this year’s teacher’s day a memorable one for our dear teachers.
Express your gratitude
On this day, celebrate the efforts, contributions, and sacrifices made by teachers, and make sure they know how much you appreciate and love them. You can take turns and give small speeches. You can also try making a video message wishing the teachers a happy teacher’s day. You can also get parents to convey their wishes in this video. Make sure to include photos and clips of your memories in the classroom and outside with your teachers if you have them. It will surely be a memorable moment for your dear teachers.
Decorate the classroom
You can suggest to your children to decorate their classrooms. Use balloons, banners, and other items that don’t cost too much. You can also make notes with wishes and place them around the class for your teachers to see. Also, make sure you have permission from the required authorities to do so. And don’t forget to clean up afterwards and don’t leave the classroom dirty.
Gifts
Gifts don’t necessarily have to be expensive. After all, it is the thought that counts. Your teachers will be happy with whatever you get them. You can try making the gifts yourself too. Books and stationery that they have regular use for can also be a good choice. Discuss with your friends what everyone will be getting so that everyone doesn’t end up getting the same gift.
You can also buy them sweets and flowers to show your appreciation towards them. Handmade cards from students wishing a happy teacher’s day are also special gifts that teachers are sure to cherish. Make it a surprise and everyone can give their gifts together.
Lunch
If possible, help the children to arrange lunch for their teachers or even take them to lunch. If the children are too young, discuss with other parents what you can do. The children can even decide on a single item for each and bring it together to have lunch with everyone.
Games and fun activities
You can also make the celebrations more active with games and other fun activities. Plan fun activities for the teachers to take part in. Singing songs, a skit, board games- all these can be good ideas to try out. Another thing you can try out is to organise a small treasure hunt where the teachers will have to follow clues to find notes and gifts from their students. Instead of giving the gifts directly to your teachers, you can give them to them this way to make it more fun.
Pledge to follow your teacher’s guidance more thoughtfully
On this teacher’s day, students, try to pledge along with your classmates that you will diligently follow your teachers’ instructions and advice, and take note to be more respectful towards them in the future. Make sure you don’t forget about it after the day ends. Be prompt with keeping up with the pledge you make.
The effort and hard work teachers put towards ensuring their students grow up as responsible adults is not something they do for their salaries. Most teachers do it for their passion and for the betterment of humanity. It is often a thankless job. Students and parents often have clashes and differences in opinions with teachers. Students fail to understand the importance of the advice and actions of their teachers at times. They fear and dread their classrooms and will often want to get out of school as soon as possible. They only come to realise the value of what their teachers were teaching them a lot later in life. Make sure you are not individuals who fail to realise this and give your teachers the respect they deserve. Listen carefully to what they tell you and make sure you express your gratitude for their efforts.
We wish all the teachers out there a Happy Teacher’s Day. We thank you for all your contributions and are grateful for the sacrifices you make to shape the children for our future.
Happy Teacher’s Day! 🙂
