Before we go into the details let us ask ourselves a few questions. Let us go back to our early childhood. Imagine yourselves with your little hands and legs and cute face at just 5 or 6 years old. Who was your hero at that point of your life? What were your ambitions at that point in time? Fathers play a major role in the cognitive, emotional and social development of a child. Answering these two questions can give us an idea of this.
Our first superheroes
Almost all of us grow up believing in superheroes and for most of us, our dad is our first superhero. We idolise him and he is flawless in our eyes especially during our early childhood. For many, our dads continue as our superheroes even during our teenage and afterwards. As a result of all this admiration, our initial ambitions are always to be like our dad when we grow up, more commonly to do the same job that he does. Irrespective of whether we grow out of them or not, these childhood obsessions leave a mark on us and basically run our lives during the course of our formative years.
Teaching Emotional Maturity
How do you teach your child emotional maturity? You can never teach anyone this. All you can do is help him/her learn it. Here we observe a great significance in father-child relations. It is perceived that children who get the opportunity to be more involved with their fathers tend to end up more confident and emotionally mature. Thus, the more time you devote to your child during his formative years, the greater the chances of him/her being emotionally efficient.
The Conventional roles – Protector, Educator and so on
As part of our family system, fathers and mothers were assigned well-demarcated roles. By convention, children tend to associate (or are nudged into associating) their fathers with the roles of a protector. While mothers are more involved in their child’s education, fathers are usually the ones you can depend on. No matter what the situation is, you are sure that he’ll make things right for you. Most of this knowledge sharing process occurs in an unconscious manner. Children imbibe the tips and tricks by observing the way in which their fathers interact in society – yet because this is such a subconscious process, neither the father nor the kid is aware of the process at work.
Changing dynamics
The world today is undergoing revolutionary changes. As a result, even our family system and roles are undergoing changes. The conventional father-mother roles are getting blurred as both parents don equal roles in the upbringing of their kids. Today’s dads are no longer just protectors. They also share the roles of caregivers and baby-sitters. This is mainly due to both parents working, which leads to a more equal delegation of parental roles. However, if the father is often missing from the child’s life, it is inevitable that the child will feel greatly affected and possibly, neglected. We are always busy with work or something else and today’s fathers are hardly able to make time for their children. This affects children in no small measure.
A father is one of the most important people in anyone’s life. You just have to keep this in mind while dealing with your kids. Don’t forget the roles that you need to fulfil. Try to put in some extra hours with your kids. For the better development of our children, may all daddies strive to nurture better relationships with our kids.
Wishing all daddies a Happy and Fulfilling Father’s Day!
