‘Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.’
Children’s Day – a day for the young ones in our lives. What does this day signify? We need to understand that Children’s Day is not just about a fun and celebratory day. It is also a day about raising awareness of the issues faced by children and reminding them to take appropriate action at the right time. That is why almost every country has a day dedicated to celebrating their children. In Singapore, Children’s Day was celebrated on October 1 for many years until the MoE decided to celebrate it on either the First or second Friday of October every year. Singapore celebrates Children’s Day this year on October 8.
As Nelson Mandela once said- “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” Children are the hope and future of our society. So, we are responsible for making sure that this future is protected and our children feel appreciated and happy.
“The best way to make children good is to make them happy.” – Oscar Wilde
Children’s Day aims to dedicate a day to give focus to the welfare, development, and contentment of our children. By dedicating a day for them, the government also aims to motivate the children to realize their potential and take on more initiative to play their part.
Children’s Day is not a public or school holiday in Singapore. But, preschoolers and primary school students do not have classes. They are allowed to spend the day at home, spending time with their family. Parents can make use of it to spend quality time with their children and engage in fun activities. Even though students in the higher grades have to attend classes, the teachers and staff usually plan activities to celebrate Children’s Day at school. Similarly, various organizations hold special events to celebrate the day and raise awareness on the issues faced by children in today’s world.
So, don’t hold back and take some time off to spend with your children. We have picked some activities you can enjoy with your children. Try them out, and let us know if you had fun.
Happy meals
A good meal in the morning can make the whole day better. Cook your child’s favorite breakfast and let them relish it. You can also order take-outs or dine out with your family. Ask your children what they would like to eat. Buy them their favorite desserts.
Weekend trips
You can plan family trips over the Children’s Day weekend. Many events are held during the time that can be fun to visit. Try to find places you can take your children that are nearby. Also, check to make sure the places have safety measures against the pandemic. Another thing to keep in mind is that many places will have strict requirements that you have to follow. Check them out before going.
Here are a few ideas on places you can take your children:
- Take a walk through the Singapore Botanic Gardens. You can also plan a picnic with your family.
- Jurong Bird Park is a fun place to take your children. Seeing a variety of exotic and rare birds can be a wonderful and educative experience.
- A trip to Amazonia can be fun for all. They have fun activities planned for Children’s Day like treasure hunts and competitions. There will be restrictions on the number of people and strict crowd control due to the pandemic.
- Check out the Children’s Biennale 2021. You can visit their sites to see exciting content your children can enjoy.
- Universal Studios is another exciting place you can visit. What can be more exciting for children than seeing their favorite characters in real life? And the rides; who can say no to that?
- Scientastic October – SAFRA Jurong has organized a series of fun activities aimed at developing a scientific temper in young children. Take your children on a journey experiencing the wonders Science has to offer.
Give out gifts to your children
The best gift that you can give your children would be – your time! Spend time with them on this day and create precious memories that would last a lifetime. This gesture can make them happy and feel appreciated.
For gifts, consider gifting them books. Introducing your children to the joy of reading will help them throughout their lives. You can also gift craft materials and other things that support their hobbies.
Crafting with your children
Another fun activity that you can do with your children is crafting. Watch online tutorials, or you can enroll in workshops online or offline conducted during the time.
Take some time to talk to your children
Children everywhere face different social and mental issues, and adults might not be aware of them. So, take some time to talk to your children and ask them about any issues or troubles they might be facing. Listen to them without judgment and offer them your unwavering support.
This Children’s Day, celebrate and cherish your young ones. You should also try to bring out the inner child in you and have fun for yourself. We wish everyone a Happy Children’s Day! 🙂
