Happy Birthday!! To whom, you may ask? Singapore, of course! August 9 is a date that our grandparents, parents, and of course, we (the generation that is also known as the babies of the country), will never forget. The national day parades that we have been accustomed to watching (either on television or in-person) have indeed become an eagerly-anticipated annual family affair for most of us, the young and young-at-heart. .
As we welcome the nation’s 55th National Day, we inhale deeply because this has definitely been a challenging year for many of us. Undoubtedly what we would describe as an unprecedented year, no one saw Covid-19 coming, let alone expected the massive changes that this virus has made in our lives. The entire world has been struck and we are still reeling under its impact.
A tiny island city-state, Singapore is no exception to the effects of the virus. We have also been hit, but we have not given up, and are still standing together to fight this virus. Daily, we pay attention to the number of community cases, hoping for an improvement in the situation. This year, we have come and stood together, we have persevered, and we are still going strong. This is what makes this year’s National Day Parade (and the other celebrations surrounding it) even more special, and honestly, very different.
No limit to the spirit
Due to the present situation, there are also going to be a number of structural changes in this year’s celebrations. We are going to have some restrictions on the number of participants and direct viewers allowed during the national day parade. But should that reduce the spirit of the celebrations? Not at all!
NDP 2020 will consist of two parts – a parade at Padang in the morning and a show at the Star Performing Arts Centre in the evening. Due to social distancing and COVID-19 containment requirements, there will be only 150 spectators and 300 participants in the NDP celebrations. Usually, the number of participants itself comes up to around 5000-6000. The participants and spectators will be subject to strict COVID-19 monitoring protocols. Singaporeans however, can tune in and watch the celebrations on their televisions or smart devices.
Celebrating the frontline warriors
Yes, the past few months have been gruesome. Some of us have lost our dear ones. Others have had to go through the pains of unemployment and loneliness. But amidst all these difficulties and ill-fortune, there were also tales of grit, hope and positivity. The fight against COVID-19 is one in which each of us continues to participate in. However, there have been many in the frontline of our response activities. These include doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, transport workers, members of the security forces, community leaders and social workers. This year’s NDP will be a celebration of these many ordinary people who have inspired the entire nation with their extraordinary efforts. 100 workers who are part of the frontline services have been selected for the NDP mobile column this year, as a mark of admiration to the work that these categories of citizens have rendered. As the column traverses the heartland of the nation, these workers will be cheered on, demonstrating the nation’s heartfelt gratitude and respect.
Concurrent Flag Ceremonies At 8 Places
As a mark of resilience to adversity, this year the flag ceremony will take place concurrently at eight different places. These eight places from which the national flag soars up will stand for the six key sectors of Singapore in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, apart from Padang, the flag ceremony will be held at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, North Vista Secondary School, Kampung Admiralty, Changi Airport, Lifelong Learning Institute, Enabling Village in Bukit Merah and FairPrice Hub in Joo Koon.
This year’s NDP is surely one that is going to be remembered for generations to come. At a time of great confusion and chaos, the celebrations will be a reminder of the ethos of brotherhood and love that marks Singapore. It will also remind us that our society has the capability to combat any adversary and bounce back stronger from any crisis.
