Another 9th of August is around the corner. Singapore gets ready once again to don the celebratory colours and share a sense of unbound joy. It is time to celebrate the idea of Singapore all over again. The National Day celebrations of our land are undoubtedly one of the most colourful commemorations across the globe. This year our ever so young nation turns 54. Here’s a little something about the all too familiar and cherished National Day of our motherland.
A sneak peek into the history
National Days are normally associated with the act of liberation of a nation from an external power or an unworkable system. Singapore’s National Day as we have all learned in history is the celebration of the nation’s independence from the Malaysian Federation. On 9 August 1965, the island nation of Singapore was formed. Critics had almost instantly written it off. What could a tiny nation in the Malaya Peninsula seek to achieve? How would it even survive? How would the vast amount of diversity in culture, religion and ethnicity be contained? But 54 years later the critics stand proven wrong. The tiny nation in the Malaya Peninsula has grown into a model for all nations across the world. Unprecedentedly, the nation of Singapore which its huge tranche of diversity promoted itself to the status of a developed nation within a single generation. Singapore tells a story of resilience, diversity and confidence. There is always a sense of togetherness and that is what makes every National Day celebration special.
The Theme – Our Singapore
Every year a theme is celebrated as the backdrop for the National Day celebrations. A theme song is also composed. This year-round we have come up with the theme – ‘Our Singapore’. So, what is the message behind this theme? Singapore is not exclusive to any particular group of people; it belongs to the whole of Singaporeans and this is exactly what this year’s theme conveys.
The Glamorous National Day Parade
There is no talk about the National Day without a mention about the National Day Parade. The parade is a visual extravaganza that treats your sense to great pomp and splendour. Filled with breathtaking aerial shows, military exhibitions, cultural performances and showcases, the parade tells the tale of Singapore’s advancements and culture in a mesmerising manner. This year’s highlights include the debut of the Multi-role Tanker Transport of the Air Force, the participation of the Armed Forces, the Home Team Volunteer contingent and the Mobile Column with new features. Everyone is looking forward to the parade which after the major rehearsals on July 27 and August 3 will be on full display on the 9th of August. The parade will be held at Padang this year.
The PM’s Message and the Fireworks
The Prime Minister delivers the National Day Message in connection with the commemoration in which various aspects of domestic and international significance are discussed. The progress made by the nation in various fields is highlighted and the future prospects are examined. But that’s not the most exciting thing about the celebrations, is it? For many, it is the fireworks that mark the best of the National Day celebrations and tons of people throng to vantage points to enjoy the visual treat in its fullest. The multi-colour pyrotechnics of different shapes and sizes light up the night sky as a part of the celebrations and are an attraction to young and old alike.
Today we have achieved a lot of things – things that were considered not possible at all a few decades ago. But it is necessary to continually reinforce the real ethos of this great nation and pass it on to the coming generations. Happy Birthday Singapore, may your youth and vitality live on!
