On 21st November 2019, the results of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) were released. 98.4% of the 40,256 Primary 6 students who took the examination cleared it and gained eligibility for moving on to secondary school. If your kid took the PSLE this year then we are sure that your household witnessed a great deal of preparation related activity during the run-up to the exam. The results might be satisfying for many but at the same time, there would also be students and parents who feel dissatisfied with the results. But now that the results are out, what should be the next course of action?
Help your kids deal with it
Your kid might have scored extremely well. In this event congratulate him but at the same time make sure that he does not get complacent. But what should you do when your child has fared poorly? Rather than being extremely critical, it would be better if you concentrate on helping your child handle the failure. Spend some time with your child. Tell him that it is fine, and that one test is not a measure of his/her capabilities. Trust us when we say that hearing this from you would be the most consoling thing for your child.
What should Parents do?
We live in a highly competitive world and at times all of us get carried away. As parents we may want to see our children finish at the top spot in everything that they do. When they do not achieve this or fare badly, it might disappoint and frustrate us. We might also be drawn into a more devastating vice – comparison. Do not compare your child’s performance with that of other children. This would only scar your child.
Before going to the kids with praise or consolation, parents should convince themselves of the fact that the PSLE is no final verdict on their child’s potential.
View the PSLE as an eye-opener
No matter how bad or great your child’s PSLE performance was, it should always be seen as a positive event. Why do we say so? It is because PSLE can offer more utility than just being a mechanism for streaming children for secondary education. A more important aspect that we tend to forget is that the PSLE helps you get a better idea about your child’s natural talents and inclinations. If your child scored bad, it does not mean that he is of a lower intellect. It just means that his talents lie elsewhere.
The road ahead
The PSLE for 2019 is over. The results are out. It is thus time to leave it where it rightfully should be – in the past. You should help your kids do this and make them look towards the future. Whichever stream of secondary school your child has made it to, teach him to be courageous. There are going to be many more challenges in the future which are going to be more trying than the PSLE, and he should be brave enough to embrace them. Regardless of your kid’s PSLE scores, he is going to have to put in a lot more effort in the coming years. Try to make him prepared for that.
The PSLE is a good test to measure your child’s academic prowess before the secondary level. But it is should never be perceived as the final authority on your child’s abilities. Now that you are done with it, help your child make peace with the results and teach him to look forward with confidence and determination. All the best! 😊
