Michael J. Fox once said, “Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” At every new juncture of our lives, family takes on a different meaning—from when we were doe-eyed teenagers declaring that we have found the loves of our lives, to grandparents who have seen generations transform before us. Family has different meanings to different individuals. Over the years, we’ve seen our understanding of family evolve and change as we enter different phases of life.
Growing Up
When we were young and convinced that we could rule the world with our pre-teen and teenage angst, family meant mum’s constant nagging and escaping with dad to play a game of badminton. A place often taken for granted, we viewed house and home as interchangeable terms. What we failed to realise then, is that a home is the result of the family within it.
We came back to those four walls every day, either in jubilation at having scored top marks for our examinations, or in dread after being scolded by our teachers. The walls became a home with the warmth and care that mothers provide and fathers’ bashful attempts to be humorous. The presence of our siblings changed the space and family further—taking ‘annoying’ to a whole new level. However, the transformation of their characters and values took place because they were given the support and love they needed. This is especially in times when the young ones were bent on beating themselves down.
Being Adults
As we grew into adulthood, the chase for wealth and success increased in importance. During these times, our families became a refuge many of us drew strength from. Conversations with our parents became less strained after a long day at work, changing from lectures to discussions as we matured. Experiences began to start getting exchanged, we as learnt to see our parents not just as parents, but people whom we can converse and engage with. Family became a shelter for us to nurture ourselves, and ease into adulthood.
Moving Ahead
As we got married and moved out of home, we strived to create a family like the one we just left. The habits we declared that we would never take on (during the years of our teenage rebelliousness) became the ones that formed our core beliefs. Taking on roles that our parents took on 30 years ago, it finally hit us, that it was not as easy as it looked—to be an adult, to have a family, and to grow up.
Despite going to university and obtaining degrees, masters, even doctorates, we all fail to realise that life is our greatest teacher, and no textbook ever held the model answers to the type of lives that we should lead. Family, in the end, is an experiment, full of trials and errors, with no red marks or stickers, but blood, sweat and tears to show for our efforts.
Getting Wiser
As we have our children and move into retirement, we look back at our past and chuckle as we laugh at ourselves, for we have become the very people we promised ourselves never to become— naggy, long-winded and slow individuals, taking more time than necessary to complete sentences and tasks. But, family is the reason why we are still here. The love and support that they provide us help us to become the best people we can ever be.
No matter our complaints, it forms the greatest reason for our existence. So let’s be active here, let’s put aside our pride, pick up the phones, and tell these people that we love them. We know that we’ll do that—what about you?
