“Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.” – Jim Rohn
This quote holds true for anyone – no matter how young, how old, how rich and how highly-educated. In this blog entry, let us focus specifically on students during their exam preparation.
Each and every student is unique in their own way and has different capabilities, skills and learning styles. But, what’s common between them all? Time!
The way in which one makes use of the precious time available to them determines the outcome of their endeavours.
Getting your children to understand why they must learn time management skills and how to attain such skills may seem tedious. Children are not truly aware of how quickly time flies. It is your duty as responsible parents to help them understand the importance of time management. So, with exam time fast approaching (for some students), what can you do for your children to ensure they are making the best use of the time available?
Why teach children time management?
- Reduces stress and anxiety – They won’t have to do last-minute rushed work. Proper planning will prepare your child better for any scenario to come. Overall, you will have fewer things to worry about.
- Adds structure to life – Better time management will lead to more order and structure in life. It will help your children to be more stable and responsible in life as they grow.
- Future Career prospects – Time management skills aid in better job performance. Managing time will allow them to handle multiple tasks and keep up with the schedules of their job.
- Time for Academics and Co-curricular – Your children will be able to focus on their academics as well as other co-curricular activities they are interested in.
- A happier personal life – The better we manage our work hours, the more time we get to spend with family and friends.
How to save time during exam preparation?
Set Goals
The first thing you have to do is direct your kids to focus on what needs to be achieved. Time can be prioritised based on the main objectives. Set goals for your children to achieve and also set a time limit for each goal. But make sure the goals are realistic. Achieving the goals on a step by step basis will motivate your children and helps add momentum.
Create proper routine
Take inputs and suggestions from your children and help them to create a routine that fits their needs. Sticking to a routine can help create a daily flow and assist your children in saving time. A good night’s sleep is vital for your children to function well during the day. Waking up fully refreshed and energetic can have them working with focus, saving a lot of time.
Self-assessment
Help your children find out their strengths and weaknesses. Try to find out where they are wasting their time and how they can repurpose it. Keeping a daily journal can be helpful for this.
Be organised
Keep everything ordered and clean. Your children will not have to search for things and waste time. Constantly review your children’s preparations and see how they can improve. Only by constant review and changes made, they can arrive at the best possible methods suited for them.
Eliminate Distractions
When your children are working on something or studying, try to ensure that their surroundings are distraction-free. Ask them to select an area without distractions and do their work there. Set the hours for screen usage and make sure the children stick to it. Create boundaries in your house where they aren’t allowed to use their devices.
MHow to utilise time efficiently during the exam?
Understanding the exam structure and taking up mock exams
Ask your children to look at the previous year’s question papers to understand how marks and portions are divided among different sections of the question paper. It can help your children prepare accordingly.
Mock exams are your best friends when it comes to getting your children familiarised with the exam structure and also preparing them to better manage time during the exam. Make your children attend as many mock examinations as they can. Mock examinations also help teach them to manage stress during exams.
Get everything ready early
Get the things your children need for the exams at least a day before the exam. Having all the things at hand can help them not waste time looking around and can help them stay stress-free during the exams.
Reading thoroughly
Tell your children to read through all the questions once. Help them practice identifying the questions which are easy to answer. Ask them to visualise how they are going to answer the questions by allotting time to each section.
Managing stress
Stress can make students freeze or even forget what they studied. Before taking up the exams, ask them to take a few deep breaths and tell themselves that they can do well in the exams.
We are sure these tips won’t let you down if you implement them properly. For the students with upcoming assessments, we wish you all the very best! 🙂
