The end-of-year examinations are fast approaching us. Are we all set for them?
Yes, (to the primary six students) we know that you have all been working really hard in a bid to put up your best performance in the upcoming PSLE examinations. The past weeks must surely have been hectic and now the all-important exam days are near. But while the exam day is undoubtedly important, there is another day that is equally important but often gets forgotten- the day before your exams.
Yes, the eve of any examination is an extremely important day and there are several things that you should take care of on this day in order to ensure that everything goes according to plan inside the exam hall.
Bedtime rules
Rule number one – The night before the exam, go to bed early! There is really no point burning the late night oil at this point, and you really should not skip a proper sleep on the eve of your most significant exam. Come the actual day of your exam, you need to wake up early, so it’s best to do so after a full night of sleep recharge. The efforts for the same obviously need to be put on the previous day. Go to bed early and ensure that you get at least 8 hours of sound sleep. Keep away your electronic gadgets and do not let it prevent you from a restful sleep.
Watch your plate
Food! Now this is something that is close to all our hearts. With all the food that we are taking in, we need to make sure that our tummies stay happy and healthy before the examinations. You definitely don’t want to end up with an upset stomach inside the exam hall. Once again, the effort should be made in the days just before the exam. On the previous day of the exam, make sure that you eat healthily and food that is full of nutrition. Avoid over-eating and eat until you’re 80% full. Not being too full will help you manage blood sugar levels which in turn affects how well you can concentrate on your exams. It’s better to eat light during the exam season, but make sure that you don’t go hungry. Also, make sure to avoid too much sugar-rich food. As much as possible, try to eat home-cooked meals.
Get all set for the exam
Ok, so how would it be if on the exam day you are running all around the house trying to find out where you kept your pen or calculator? None of us wants to be in that situation. How can you avoid this?
Make sure that you have everything in order on the previous day of the examination. On the previous day, sit down, take a look at all the things that you will need to bring to the exam hall on the next day. Make sure that you have everything in place (including what you are supposed to wear) and will not have to worry about searching for anything on the exam day. That flurry of panic will just throw you off-guard and set you off on a bad note just before the exams.
Rules of panic
So how often do we freak out when our exams are near? The previous day of the exam is one of the most common days when it comes to freaking out. The reasons can be many, ranging from self-doubt to anxiety.
Always remember, there’s no need to panic. Remind yourself that you are ready for the exam and that you have put in the necessary hard work. Parents should ensure that they spend some quality time with their children on the previous day of the examinations. Speak to them, calm their nerves and reassure them.
Time to keep the books away?
A lot of people say that you should keep your books away on the previous day of the examination. For many, studying on the previous day can only lead to an added degree of anxiety. So parents, if your child falls into this category, then make sure that they keep their books aside at an appropriately earlier time, without causing unnecessary stress to themselves. If your kids are ok with staying with their books even at the eleventh hour, then it’s perfectly fine to let them revise or do something else related to their exam preparation even on the previous day of the exams. But always remember that there is an element of risk in this, so try to practice discretion according to the studying habits and emotional state of the student.
Relax…
Spend some time on the previous day of the exam to relax. Listen to some music, watch a few funny YouTube videos or do some meditation. Let those nerves get calmed and that mind be refreshed to face the exam with optimal efficiency on the next day.
So, the bottom line is – stay relaxed, be prepared and trust in the effort that you have put in. Remember that the previous day of the exam is as important as the exam day itself.
All the best! 🙂
