William Wordsworth, one of the greatest poets in the history of English literature wrote in one of his works,
‘The Child is the father of the Man’.
The essence of what the great poet tells us is that what we face and learn as children get imprinted in our minds and are usually the most prominent influence on our development as adults. In this respect, given the present realities, one thing appears clear – the children of today are definitely poised to be the greatest generation this world has ever seen.
Why do we say so? Well, we will get to that in a minute. We will also speak about a few things that need to be done by the parents of this age to ensure that their kids don’t fall back in this age of great opportunities.
What is so special about the upcoming generation?
So what makes these kids all that special? What does Gen Z have those other generations before it did not?
Isn’t it a bit obvious? Take a look around you. What do you see? We are surrounded by some of the most breathtaking technology, some of which would have been fit only for plots in a science fiction movie just a few decades back. Today we have Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, advanced audio and visualization capabilities, innovative and interactive social media to name a few of the powerful tech that is around us.
There is just so much opportunity out there. There is so much that you can do. Whether it is picking up a subject or art or language, you have the resources at your fingertips.
The world is so interconnected. You have the option to explore and get in touch with all that is out there.
So yes, there is every ingredient out there that can give this generation greatness. But there are some other things that have to be addressed and it is to these factors that we need to pay a bit of extra attention so that our kids are able to realize the available potential.
Leveraging the tech
Technology is the currency of the present world. We are at the stage where you cannot imagine existence without the functionalities that our gadgets and the internet offer us. We need to be tech-literate if we aspire to make it big. So kids growing up today must be exposed to the technology around them in a healthy manner with adequate safeguards so that they do not fall prey to gadget addiction or other threats. We must ensure that our kids grow up tech-savvy with the ability to learn and unlearn the ever-improving technology.
Discover themselves
All this progress will be meaningless if we are not able to use it to discover our aptitudes as well as interests and develop them. We must let our kids make use of the internet and other available technology to develop their passions and cater to their learning process. Our kids need to be imparted with the attitude to be constant learners and willing to explore the various resources that would help them excel in their domains.
Don’t forget those values
Of course, all these changes do not mean that we forget to teach our kids those basic lessons that need to be learned at a real young age. Ensure that you share with your kids what the right values are. We should teach our kids to never forget the beautiful symphonies of care, compassion and love. It is with the right mix of values and skills that we can craft a truly great generation.
The current age is no bereft of values though. We just have to look beyond the noisy and nonsensical outlets to understand this. For every tale of disaster that has been told, there are definitely acts of compassion that are concurrently being performed that bring out the best in humanity. It is our responsibility to ensure that our kids see these tales.
The world beckons the upcoming generation, which is certain to grow up into greatness. As parents to this generation, the task is clear cut – lend your wisdom and experience to ensure that your kids can make the most out of the countless opportunities.
