Kentucky Fried Christmas Dinner, Japan
Are you more of a person who would prefer staying at home and eating chicken? Well, Christmas doesn’t leave anyone behind. In Japan, as the majority of the people aren’t Christian and don’t want to spend a long time cooking turkey, KFC launched a special fried chicken bucket for the holiday. Roller-skating to Christmas Mass
The legend says that roller skaters would wake up children who slept with their big toes hanging out the window—just in time for mass. Now, every year, children wake up early and roller skate through the streets to get there in time to the morning mass. Right after the mass, they head home to enjoy the Latin American traditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (cornmeal dough stuffed with meat).
Day of the Little Candles, Colombia
In Colombia, the main Christmas tradition happens on the day of the Immaculate Conception on December 7. To honor the Virgin Mary, every household places candles wherever they can be seen.Over the years, this tradition has been picked up by the various surrounding towns and cities which are now decorated with lights and candles as the Christmas season approaches. In the town of Quimbaya, people participate in a competition to see who can come up with the best arrangement in the neighbourhood.Regardless of whether we feast on turkey, or go to Orchard Road to admire the beautiful Disney themed Christmas lights, we recognize that these are not the only ways to celebrate Christmas. Different countries in the world have a different way of honoring the birth of Christ, and learning about them can tell us a lot about different cultures and values! But no matter where you are, the meaning behind this festive season remains. Christmas is a time for people to come together, to celebrate, to love. Remember that as you join your families in your Christmas preparations, it is not the presents or traditions that should be of importance. In the end, celebrate Christmas for what it means — love and family – the warmth that the festive season brings.
