Snow-covered scenes from Hollywood movies. Melodious and gleeful carols. A surge of festive fervour. The sight of decorated trees, stars, lights and gifts. The world looks forward to its Decembers. But what is the reason? Christmas! Every year December 25 is celebrated (by most traditions) as Christmas, the world’s most popular holiday. But the festivities begin much before the 25th. In fact, the entire month of December is filled with the Christmas spirit. Let’s take a peek into this joyful season.
The Story Behind It
For the more than 2 billion Christians around the world, Christmas is of great religious significance. It is the second-most important festival for the religion of Christianity and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, who is regarded by his followers (Christians) as being one among the Holy Trinity. Christians refer to Jesus’ mother as Mother Mary. It is believed that Mary gave birth to Jesus (around 2000 years ago) in a manger while she and her husband were in the city of Bethlehem. The couple is said to have searched for an inn but being unable to find one were forced to settle for the manger.
The celebrations
Regardless of its religious significance, Christmas is a holiday that millions of non-Christians celebrate as well. Why is that? Well because it’s a lot of fun.
There are a number of symbols associated with Christmas. The Christmas tree is one of the most popular of these. People adorn fir trees (natural as well as artificial ones) with bells, lights and other pieces of decoration. The Christmas crib is another popular item. These are miniature representations of mangers with figures of the infant Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and kings who came to see the baby. Then there is the Christmas star. Does that have a story behind it as well? It sure does. The decorative stars that many hang outside their homes represent the star which is believed to have led the three wise men to the manger where the infant Jesus was.
Santa Claus and his reindeers
But what is the first thing that comes to our minds when we hear the word Christmas? Yes, SANTA CLAUS! Every child dreams about Santa riding his magical sledge pulled by reindeers through the sky and dropping off gifts for little ones. The corpulent, bearded old man clad in red and white has lighted up Christmas for billions of children. Then they grow up to realise that it was their parents all along who planted those Christmas presents every year. But is it so? Is Santa just a legend? Well. Even grown-ups would want to believe that it isn’t. A part of everyone still believes in Santa, no matter how old they become.
Anyways giving out presents to dear ones (not just children) is one of the most special things associated with Christmas.
Christmas eve, the night and the big day
On Christmas Eve (24th December), people would be indulging in hectic preparations for the next day. Last minute shopping for clothes, foodstuff and presents along with setting up decorations at home.
On the intervening night of 24th and 25th December, special services are held in churches in which millions of people take part. Celebrations begin in the night. Cake and wine are served at homes in many countries. On the 25th, sumptuous meals are prepared, and people get together with their families.
Christmas is a time to reconnect with dear ones, to smile and enjoy. It is a season of gifts, a reason to relax and spread love. This Christmas may you be able to do exactly this. May a ton of presents and cherishable memories come your way.
Merry Christmas!
