“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”
― Henry James
World Kindness Day is observed on November 13 every year. It was started in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. Even though it is not an officially recognized day, it is popular and observed in many countries. The Kindness movement has been trying to get the UN to recognize it as an official day. According to them, the Day is to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness for good that binds us.
Kindness is something that can transcend race, religion, gender, or ideologies. It is something that binds us all as a single race and has enabled our species to thrive and become what we are now. It is a value we need the most right now but are slowly losing it. Especially now, when people are suffering due to the pandemic, we need kindness more than ever. It is soon going to be two years since the pandemic broke out, during which we have seen countless deaths and people suffering all over the world.
When people faced lockdowns and quarantines, many felt alienated and alone. The pandemic has also seen a rise in depression and suicide rates. Most of you might have spent the lockdowns with your family and watching movies, using your phones, and ordering takeouts. But many couldn’t afford to do so. They might even be next door to you. We often don’t take the time to think about these. But on this Kindness Day, let us spend some of our time to give back to our society and help out someone in need.
What can you do?
The main objective of the Day is to encourage spreading kindness through small gestures. It can be anything. So, let us look at some ways you can help out.
- Check in on people around you. You might not know what people are going through. Your coworkers, friends, neighbours, anyone can be going through a rough patch in life. Sometimes, someone asking whether they are alright might be the thing that offers them comfort and gives them the will to carry on.
- Talk to your parents and grandparents. It might not seem like much but do it anyway. Many of us forget to spend time with them. If you are living apart from them, take some time to visit or call them. Ask them about how they are doing, and make sure to tell them you love them.
- Cook for the people you love. You can share your meal with strangers too. Food is something that can make anyone happy.
- Leave reviews for local stores and restaurants. The pandemic situation has affected businesses a lot. It is the small businesses that have struggled the most. Try to purchase from your local stores and leave good online reviews to help them get better business.
- Buy groceries or essentials for a neighbour who is struggling. Find someone who is going through a hard time and buy the essential stuff that you can afford. It will help out a lot.
- Volunteer. Money isn’t the only way you can help people. Your effort, too, can be donated. You can volunteer at nursing homes, orphanages, and other similar places. Give back to society on this World Kindness Day. Offer your help where it is needed.
- While being kind to others, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Often we are our harshest critics. We push ourselves and punish ourselves the most. So, this Kindness Day, be loving to yourself and be kind.
- Hug your family and tell them you love them. As soon as you wake up, go and hug everyone. Make it a big long hug.
- Smile at others while you walk by. It is something you should be doing at all times. A simple smile can change the mood of the people seeing us. Smiles are contagious, and they don’t cost you anything.
- Tip your waiters or service workers. When you visit a restaurant, leave a good amount as a tip to show your gratitude.
- Your parents and teachers work hard and suffer for you a lot. This Kindness Day, show your gratitude for them. Buy them a meal, spend time with them and let them know how much they mean to you.
- If you know someone who needs motivation, send them a simple message of encouragement. It might mean a lot to them.
- Donate your child’s old toys and good clothes they have grown out of. It can be used by those who are less fortunate than you.
The world can be an unkind place, often cruel. But, we as a species have thrived and developed so much because we worked together. And this society wouldn’t be possible without values like kindness, love, and humility. So, this World Kindness Day, let’s keep in mind what makes us human and offer a helping hand to all those in need. We wish you all a Happy World Kindness Day! 🙂
