“Thanksgiving is a joyous invitation to shower the world with love and gratitude.” – Amy Leigh Mercree
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year as an act of saying thanks and gratefully acknowledging the goods and favors that God and the people around us have showered us with.
In Singapore – a country home to diverse culture and a wide range of festivals, thanksgiving is a very important occurrence in a calendar year. It’s a time to get-together with friends and family, take a walk through the beautiful memory lane, and enjoy a delicious feast.
Why is Thanksgiving celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November ?
The “Day of Public Thanksgiving” was declared by George Washington on November 26, 1789, and has been celebrated every Thursday since. Thanksgiving was first declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. However, a few decades later, Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date to the second to last Thursday out of concern that a later holiday might reduce the Christmas shopping season. Congress finally intervened to put an end to the dispute on December 26, 1941, when Roosevelt signed a resolution designating the fourth Thursday in November as the Federal Thanksgiving Day holiday.
The origin of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day was first observed as a harvest holiday with a huge feast serving as the focal point of festivities.
The Plymouth Plantation hosted the “First Thanksgiving” in 1621 when religious exiles from England, known as the Pilgrims, invited the native Americans to a harvest feast to commemorate their first prosperous yield. Native Americans from the Wampanoag tribe in North America made peace with the pilgrims in 1620 and taught them how to raise corn, beans and squash as well as how to catch fish.
The celebration in 1621 is said to have been the first joint meal after the turmoil between the two parties’ came to an end.
