“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” – Brad Henry
Most, if not all of us have gone to school before, and there has definitely been a teacher who had inspired, motivated, or simply just believed in us. Can you recall how that teacher had changed our lives?
A teacher is a guiding light that leads children to a safe and bright future. Most often we hear the words – “Children are the future”. In reality, the ones who shape that future are the teachers. This shows how important a role teachers play in the lives of children. We should accord them the proper respect they deserve and use ourselves to set an example for our children to do the same. We have a day specially dedicated to commemorate the importance of these individuals in the lives of our children – Teacher’s day.
Teacher’s day in Singapore
Teacher’s day is celebrated in Singapore on the last Friday of Term 3. In 2021, it falls on September 3rd. It is an official school holiday in Singapore. Various activities are planned by students to celebrate their teachers on the day. They express their gratitude for guiding them on the right path by giving them flowers, gifts, and sweets. Now that children are back in school after online classes are over, they can celebrate the day with the teachers in person. But, make sure to follow the necessary safety guidelines and take proper care while doing any activities.
Ideas to celebrate the day
Help your children in planning and provide them with assistance in anything they need. Giving back to teachers is the responsibility of every student. Use this occasion to teach them to be grateful towards their teachers.
Flowers
Flowers are a great way of showing affection and gratitude. Help your children select flowers and buy them for their teachers. If you have a garden, help your children to gather flowers from there.
Cards
Cards wishing a happy teachers day are a good idea too. It would be more touching if they are handmade. If there is no time, store-bought is also fine. But, don’t forget to write a personal message in them. The simple act of adding a few words can give immense happiness to any teacher who receives such a card from their beloved students.
Cookies or sweets
You can also help your children prepare sweets or even bake cookies to give to their teachers. It would be such a thoughtful thing to do for them. They will surely see the effort and intent behind it and be happy.
Plan with other students and buy a cake wishing “happy teacher’s day” and gather all the teachers to cut it.
Gifts
There is no need for expensive gifts. The thought is what matters. Handmade and thoughtful gifts will be more appreciated, and teachers, being relatively selfless in nature, will cherish these gifts more.
Pictures and slideshows
Help make a slideshow or short video wishing the teachers on the day. Tell the children to express their gratitude on video. Even parents can participate and leave their wishes.
Express your gratitude
Speaking in front of other students is never an easy task, but share with your child the importance of expressing their gratitude. On this day, encourage your child to give a short speech in front of the classroom expressing gratitude for the teacher, if this is possible. Assist your children in planning the speech and help them to practice saying it aloud.
Decorate the classroom
Use balloons, banners, and other items to decorate the classroom. Write quotes about teachers on the blackboard. Place handmade notes around the class wishing them around. But make sure you don’t leave the classrooms dirty and clean it all up afterward.
Games and fun activities
Plan fun activities for the teachers. A small treasure hunt to find notes from children or gifts is an idea you can suggest. Board games, singing songs or a small play will also be good.
Pledge to follow teacher’s guidance more thoughtfully
Make your children take a pledge to follow their teachers’ instructions and be more respectful of them.
These are some suggestions to help your child express their gratitude towards their teachers. After all, we need to remember that a teacher’s role in bringing up the next generation cannot be neglected by anyone. With the sacrifices they make, the effort they put in, we believe no one else has more impact on the world than teachers. So, take some time and ensure that they feel you know their importance and are grateful for them. We wish all teachers a very Happy Teacher’s Day! 🙂
