4 September 2020 – What’s the significance of this date? It’s not Independence day, it’s not Singapore’s National Day. Yes, it marks the start of the much-anticipated September school holidays, but that’s only after we celebrate Teachers’ Day! As we enter into the month of September, it is time for us to pause and remember a group of unsung heroes of this year. Not all heroes wear capes. Some handle classes for students over zoom too! 🙂
The guiding light
‘Matha Pitha Guru Deivam’, this Sanskrit proverb is worth reminiscing at this moment. It carries the message that Matha or mother leads one to his father or Pitha. The father leads one to his teacher or Guru. The Guru leads a person to God (Deivam).
This ancient verse spells out the esteemed position that our teachers rightfully deserve. They guide us towards the light of knowledge and ignite the flames of reason in our hearts.
A teacher can leave an everlasting impact on the life of a person. The story of Helen Keller is perhaps the most striking example of this. Helen Keller lost her senses of sight and hearing while she was an infant. Despite all this, she is today remembered as one of the most influential authors and political activists. How was this possible? Helen’s spectacular rise was significantly influenced by Anne Sullivan, her teacher and lifelong companion. It was through Sullivan’s efforts that Helen surprised everyone and was able to learn to read and write.
Our Selfless Heroes
Our teachers truly put in a lot of effort for the sake of their students. Take a look at the recent pandemic and associated circuit breaker measures and this becomes evident beyond doubt. As we made a switch to online learning for a good part of this year, our teachers were really caught in a pickle. One of the major issues was that of balancing their household responsibilities with their commitment towards their students. Let’s not forget that teachers too, have families. Many of them had to take care of their kids at home while at the same time prepare for and conduct online classes for their students.
Another issue was that of tiding over the technical specifics of online classes. Remember the period of Home-Based Learning that we had? Many of our teachers had to first teach themselves the way different apps and online platforms worked before they could organise online learning sessions for their classes. Add to this the fact that a lot of our teachers, as well as students, felt totally out of place as they made the abrupt switch from classroom-based learning to online learning. Explaining concepts to children who are miles away from you physically was always going to be a tough task given that this was an abrupt change, let alone a process that Singapore was not used to.
But our teachers didn’t give up on us. They swiftly equipped themselves with all the necessary ingredients to find their way through the technical aspects of conducting online lessons. Many even learnt to include added elements to their online sessions in a bid to help students understand things more easily. Our teachers also ended up providing a great deal of help to many parents in order to ensure that the online sessions went on without any hiccup
Let’s be grateful
In reality, no one who is reading this requires to be told about the need to be grateful to our teachers. Every single one of us who have attended school knows how invaluable our teachers are in our lives. This teacher’s day let us not forget to remember the teachers who have touched our lives. Let us take a moment to recognise their value and appreciate the great efforts that they put into each and every one of their students. Maybe you can send a small gift to your teacher. A batch of cookies that you baked, a nice little card or just a simple ‘thank you’. Our teachers have never and will never ask for anything. All they look out for is the welfare of the students’ under their charge.
This Teacher’s Day let’s make our teachers know that we fully value and appreciate their dedicated services. This year has been an extra tough year for them (yet we don’t see them complaining even the least bit). So let’s try to bring a few smiles on their faces through our actions on this September 4th.
Wishing all educators a Happy and Fulfilling Teachers’ Day! 🙂
