Ho Ho Ho, it’s that time of the year again! The glitter of decorative lights, the smell of the most alluring food, the spectacle of decorated trees and stars, the joy of seeing Santa along with your beautifully wrapped presents and ‘Jingle Bells’ playing in the background – the spirit of Christmas is sure to bring a smile to your face. But this isn’t every other year, is it? So many of us are naturally worried about Christmas being ruined or feeling less Christmassy. Well, we’ve got news for you, the Christmas spirit ain’t going anywhere!
Love, Family, Celebration
Christmas is celebrated across the globe by most people on the 25th of December (fun fact: certain traditions celebrate it on other dates). One of the most celebrated festivals in the world, Christmas is the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the central figure in the religion of Christianity. The Infant Jesus according to Christianity, was the son of God who was born as a man out of God’s love and desire to save the human race from evil.
Around the time of Jesus’ birth, his parents Mary and Joseph were traveling in the town of Bethlehem and were unable to find a place to stay. In the end, they were able to find a place in a manger and it was in this humble setting that Jesus was born.
Today, Christmas commemorations and thoughts are lit up by luxurious frames of pomp and celebration. The reality is that Christmas is not about external celebrations. It is ultimately about the celebration of love, family, and togetherness.
The COVID effect
Yes, COVID has been the scary and unfortunate theme of 2020. Across the nation, Singaporeans showed a lot of patience and responsibility in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not the time to let our guard down and therefore we need to be vigilant during the festive season. Singaporean Christmases are times for partying, getting together, and enjoying a lot of fun. We will have to impose on ourselves a few restrictions and adhere to the guidelines that are being issued by the government.
So, this year there will be smaller gatherings and fewer going out. Many neighbourhoods have chosen to skip the customary decorations as well.
But nothing can take away the fun
The flip side of all this is that you can innovate more this Christmas. What are some of the things that you can do apart from roaming about? What about a family video call? Now, that would be an appropriate thing to do if you want to get some Christmas vibes. You can catch up with your extended families or friends, relish a few nostalgic memories and enjoy a bit of humor.
Another great suggestion would be to get the kids together and bake your own Christmas Cake at home this year. You could also use the holiday nights to hit the couch with your family and watch some timeless Christmas movies. A re-watch of ‘The Polar Express’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ or some other Christmas movie can spread the joy of Christmas in a really delightful manner.
A reason to contribute
Yes, we are going to have a lot of fun for Christmas. But, amidst all this, what if we took the effort to do something that would make someone else smile more joyful during this Christmas as well? Take these holidays as an opportunity to contribute something to a charity or some other related cause. In this way, you can set a wonderful example to your kids, and help them grasp the true meaning of Christmas.
It’s about the people around you, it’s always been that!
We started by speaking about the importance of love and family. At the end of the day, even without the other celebrations, you could still have a magical Christmas, provided that you are surrounded by the people you love the most. It’s the people who make things special, it’s always the people. The magic of Christmas is in our presence, not presents!
Wishing everyone a Blessed Merry Christmas! 🙂
