Good Friday falls on the 15th of April in the year 2022. For Christians all over the world, the day of Good Friday is one of the holiest but also, a sad day for all Christians all over the world. It is a day of utmost significance and piety. It is vital that everyone understand the significance of this day.
History
Good Friday is a religious holiday observed by people of the Christian faith in memory of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. It is part of the Holy Week and Christians spend it mourning Christ’s death and in prayers. It comes after Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus having his last dinner with his disciples. After 2 days comes Easter, the day on which Jesus is said to have been resurrected. The Holy week is incredibly important for Christians all over the world regardless of any denomination. It also marks the end of Lent, the 40 days of fasting for Christians. The day of Good Friday and the next day are spent in mourning. One might wonder why such a sad day is called Good. Many attribute it to different reasons. Some believe it was called God’s Friday and in time came to be called Good Friday. Others say it is the day symbolising Jesus’s love and sacrifice for humanity. Some say that it came to be called Good because it was a holy day. Regardless of the origin of the word, the day stands as a symbol of sacrifice and unconditional love.
Traditions and practices
The traditions and practices vary greatly depending upon the denomination and geographical location. Most churches will have prayers where they gather and remember Jesus’s sacrifice and offer thanksgiving prayers. Many people fast during Good Friday and on the next day. Generally, Mass is not held during the day, but there is “Way of the Cross” prayers, Bible readings, and sermons held in churches all over.
In Singapore, followers of the Catholic Church go to church, perform veneration of the cross, and offer their gratitude and love for Jesus. It is customary for Singapore Christians to visit the church and take part in the solemn mass and sermons held during the day. People often gather together with friends and families to have dinner and spend time together.
How to better yourself this Good Friday?
Remember the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ
Try to read the story of Jesus Christ. There are many valuable lessons one can learn from it. Understanding why Jesus gave up his life for us will help you understand the love and care God has for us. Make sure you don’t waste your life for which Jesus gave up his.
Use the occasion to spread love and kindness to all. Take care of those who are helpless. Try to feed those who are hungry around you. Be kind to those who seem down. Spread joy to those who are feeling down. Sometimes your simple act of kindness can make a huge difference in life to the person receiving it.
Practice at least one act of kindness for the day
From now on, try to practice at least one act of kindness a day. Once you start doing this, you will see the world around you slowly turning much brighter and happier, and that too all because of you.
Offer your prayers and gratitude to God on this day. For different denominations, there are different prayers and practices. It is best to visit your local church or consult your parish priests to know more about the practices in your area.
Forgive those who have wronged you
Jesus died for the whole of humanity, even for those who sentenced him to the cross. So, try to forgive even those who have wronged you and also try to ask for forgiveness from those you have wronged. Your life is short and precious. Do not go on holding grudges and try to love everyone.
Be with your family. Tell the story of Christ to your children and others. Have prayers and family activities together. Express your love for those around you.
Fast for the day
Fasting for the day is not only going to show your gratitude towards Christ, but it will also serve as a reminder of the millions of people who go hungry every day. Buy a meal for a hungry person and try to do your part as a way to show your kindness to others as Jesus showed kindness towards you.
We wish you all a blessed and holy weekend! 🙂
