‘Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.’ Let’s face it – life is a journey and in today’s age, all of us cannot afford to stop learning. Whether we are 6 or 60 years old, learning is a life-long process and is not limited to your days in school or college. Look at how Covid-19 has forced all of us to hop onto the technology bandwagon and immerse ourselves just to stay relevant and in touch with our loved ones? Question is – how can we keep interest in learning consistent? Are there tools that we can use to optimise our learning abilities?
The education scene has evolved rapidly in the past few decades. This year we witnessed the most acute sense of these new and evolving capabilities in the field of education. Today, there are tons of points of contact for quality education – both offline and online. But how do you strike the right balance? Is online learning sufficient for children? Should video lessons be going in hand with offline or direct learning? There are tons of similar questions in the minds of parents and students.
How to move forward with learning?
How then, should you approach learning in the present context?
Both online and direct learning should be done in ways so that they complement each other. Why do we say so? Because both modes of learning offer certain exclusive benefits. Taking a look at these would make things a bit more clear.
What video lessons offer
The eyes of many students perk up the moment they hear that they get to watch videos online. Do yours lit up as well? Don’t be shy if they do! Online learning does indeed offer an enhanced amount of flexibility to the learner! Students can definitely learn at their own convenience and this will definitely be beneficial on some days that we are just not in the mood to put in the usual learning hours (let’s be honest, we all have such days).
While on other days when our energy levels are so high that we can take on more hours of learning, video lessons are also ideal in this regard. They give us the freedom to learn at our own pace and moods. Another advantage is that video-based learning helps us to transcend the walls of the classroom and explore far and wide into any topic. It is clear that direct learning might not always be conducive to achieve these goals. This makes it all the more worthwhile to utilise video lessons and other forms of online learning.
What about direct learning?
So does that mean that online learning has overshadowed the classroom-based direct learning? No! In fact, direct learning still remains important. Why do we say so? Online or video-based learning has added to the quality of learning but there are some aspects where no other mode can substitute direct learning (or what we also know as face-to-face learning).
What are these areas?
Direct learning allows teachers to not only understand the students’ behaviour, but also allows them to communicate with each other, without having the barrier of a screen between both parties. Learning, as we all know, is not just about increasing your knowledge on certain topics. True learning is holistic, it involves using all five senses to help you gain a better educational experience, allowing you to grow in all aspects.
Direct learning helps in ensuring proper mental health and social skills. Both these attributes are vital for holistic learning. Teachers are able to connect with students more promptly and this helps them spot any emotional issue that students might fall victim to. Direct learning also increases student participation in addition to providing opportunities for group activities.
Blending the perfect mix
Education must be comprehensive and able to enhance a child’s knowledge. But at the same time, it should also ensure proper mental and emotional growth. Where does that leave us? It tells us that both video lessons and direct learning have important roles in the learning process. Just examine how these two modes balance each other and enhance the overall efficiency of the learning. Video-based learning gives you unbridled flexibility. Direct learning ensures that you have to follow a classroom routine, making sure that you don’t become ill-disciplined (well, we all need at least the occasional reminder to study, right? 🙂 ) Mix them up and you get yourself a formidable duo!
So, do you have a preferred mode of learning? Remember that it’s fine to have a hybrid of both to be able to attain the best results. Follow the right blend of video lessons and direct learning to make the most out of the learning process!
