Term 3 is here, and our kids are back to school. Does your child seem to be low on energy? Does she get irritated at the slightest provocation? Do you spot her yawning quite too often? If your answers to are in the affirmative, then have no doubt about the problem at hand- lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation can have far-reaching consequences in our lives, and they can be severe in the case of kids.
Lower grades, lower efficiency and tons of other problems
Sleep is a vital aspect of maintaining good health and leading a quality life. Missing out on the required amount of sleep can open up a Pandora’s box, affecting every aspect of life. Kids who do not get a good amount of sleep tend to fare worse at school. The ability to concentrate dips and as a result lower amounts of sleep time almost definitely translates into lower grades. Lack of sleep makes kids grumpy, drifts the mind off any motivation and hampers social interactions. Many of the problems caused due to lack of sleep have the potential to haunt your kids throughout their lives. So as parents it becomes our responsibility to cultivate healthy sleeping habits in our kids.
The norms to follow
Thankfully this is not rocket science and as parents, we can easily spot and rectify the deficiencies that exist in the sleep cycles of our children. Let’s come to the question that is on your mind right now. How many hours of sleep should your child get? Sleep requirements vary across age groups. For children in the age group 7-12, generally, 9-12 hours of sleep should be adequate. For teenagers, 8-10 hours would do.
How to get it done
Now that we know how much of sleep our kids should get, let’s dive on to the execution part. How do we make it a part of our kid’s daily routine? The most important thing to do is to let your child know the importance of sleep. Make it a non-negotiable priority. Fix your child’s bedtime and ensure that he/she sticks to it. This can lead to arguments especially in the case of teenagers but with time the routine should stick if parents don’t budge but rather stress on making their kids aware of the need for adequate sleep. Another thing to keep in mind here is to not to be too lenient on bedtime rules during the holidays.
The room, songs and stories
Make sure that your kid sleeps in a room where she is not disturbed by noise. Another thing to take care of is the lighting. A dark room is best for sleep. If your kid is afraid of the dark, then you can have the light turned on in the adjacent room. Tuck your kid into bed with a lullaby or bedtime story. Such acts are good to make sleep time more fun and let your kid fall asleep more easily.
The don’ts
Summing up it would be good to keep in mind certain things that you should not be doing. Don’t give your child heavy meals before bedtime. A light dinner is always recommended. Get your kids away from the TV, video games and other gadgets well before bedtime (at least an hour before bedtime would do). Avoid keeping mobile phones and other gadgets in the room where your kids sleep.
A healthy sleep routine can create healthy and happy children. If your child is sleep deprived, then it is high time you started implementing a few of the points that we have just discussed above. Let’s teach our kids to sleep well and lead a healthy life
