“A happy family is but an earlier heaven.” – George Bernard Shaw.
The modern world moves at a fast pace that most of us are not able to keep up with. Trying to fit into that world, we often neglect the most important assets in our life like our family and other personal relationships. Strained personal relationships and even divorces are commonplace now. Families rarely have the chance to get together and spend time together, children rarely get opportunities to visit their grandparents or other relatives. Personal relationships take a backseat when people have other priorities and go after them in today’s hectic and competitive field. Moreover, people have become less tolerant and more self-centred. It is common for every household today to have its fair share of problems. But when you get into heated arguments with your spouse or other family members or even have fights, you should know that your children are watching and they might get affected more than you think.
Commonly occurring issues in families
- Strained relationships between parents
- Family feuds
- Sibling rivalry that gets out of hand
- Absentee parents or negligent parents
- Abuse by parents or family members
Any of these or other factors might be present in a modern-day family.
How are children affected by these?
- Lack of concentration and attention
- Depression and Stress
- Reduced mental and logical development
- Lack of communication skills and emotional skills
The home environment plays a vital role in a child’s mental and psychological development. Children coming from dysfunctional families almost always exhibit a lack of concentration and attention. They often fail to keep up with what is being taught in class and exhibit decreased academic performance.
More and more children are diagnosed with depression and mental issues today. The rate of childhood depression is more than ever these days and the major cause for this rise is the increasingly strained family relationships. Children with depression fail to keep up appearances in school and also fall sick more often than others. They also lack the motivation to perform well in their studies. They often fall short of the goals set for them and this, in turn, worsens their depression. The cases of child suicides are also on the increase as a result
Negligent parents and absentee parents affect a child’s brain development adversely. They do not get the proper care and even might not get proper food or medical attention if they get sick. Such children grow up with poorly developed vocabulary and other mental faculties.
Children coming from broken or strained families often lack proper communication skills and emotional intelligence to connect and communicate with others. In a classroom situation, it is vital to have such skills to interact and learn in a group environment. Children who are not able to do so will feel left out and won’t be able to have teamwork with others. They will feel reluctant to go to classes and fear interaction with others.
What you can do to make sure your children are fine.
- Keep them out of your issues and arguments
- Talk to your children
- Talk to the teachers
- Be on the lookout for signs of depression or bullying
- Try to spend more time with your children
It is common for all families to have some sort of trouble. But make sure you keep it down and low and keep it out of your children’s ears. Try to talk to your partners and family and reach amicable resolutions rather than escalating issues needlessly.
If you are experiencing family troubles and the home atmosphere is not good at the moment, make sure you communicate openly with your children. If they are old enough to understand, talk to them about what is going on and explain that you need some time to sort it all out and will get everything under control. Make sure they are dealing with their feelings regarding it properly and are not suffering silently. Offer them your support and ask if there is anything they require to help them feel ok in the situation. In the case of parents who are getting separated or divorced, make sure you talk to the children about the situation and how it is going to be going forward. Most often children feel that they are the reason why their parents got divorced. Make sure you dispel such thoughts from your child’s mind and reassure them of your love and care for them.
Talk to your child’s teachers and see if they are facing any issues at school and if so, try to find out the reason behind them with their help. They might also be able to talk to the children and help explain the situation to them. Also talking to a person outside the family might be a good way to get rid of some of their anxiety or tension.
If your child shows signs of being constantly in a depressed state or of bullying, you should talk to them and take proper action. Sometimes sibling rivalry or actions of family members might get out of hand. There might be cases of family members abusing the children. Be on the lookout for any such signs and if you suspect such a thing, make sure you are prompt with your response.
Make sure you spend the time you have off work with your children and family. Try to work through the issues you right now have in hand. Forgive and forget and don’t blow things out of proportion. A little bit of patience can go a long way.
