Ever feel like life keeps getting more and more serious? Maybe you are not the only one who feels so. With all the tension and stress surrounding our lives wouldn’t it be a lovely thing to get yourself a day on which you could be light-hearted and stress-free? That is exactly what each 1st of April offers us – a day to forget everything else by getting fooled and fooling others. It is a chance to let loose the prankster in you. April Fool’s Day has something in it for everyone if you make your mind up to pull a prank or two on your friends and family. But how did this day of fools or ‘All Fool’s Day’ come into being. The truth is that no one really knows the reason behind it for sure. Anyways, there a few arguments about the origin of the day of fools.
The French Connection
We are familiar with the Gregorian calendar that we use today with the months starting in January and ending with December. Did you know that this calendar is only around 400 years old? Before that, a lot of cultures used to celebrate the new year on dates that were around the 1st of April. This was because it was close to the spring equinox and so the new year also brought in a transition between seasons. However in 1582, under the instruction of Pope Gregory, the Gregorian calendar started to be used in a lot of countries. The same year, France switched to the Gregorian calendar. But as the story goes, a few of the French people did not know about the fact that their country had changed its calendar. These poor chaps celebrated the 1st of April as a new year like the good old times and ended up being made fun of by others. What followed this? Well, the practice kicked in and was celebrated year after year and spread to different countries. That is one story about April Fool’s Day.
There are many other narratives as well regarding the day. No one knows for sure which ones are real and which ones are there just there to make you a bigger fool. But many believe that the celebration is far older than in 1582. The Romans are said to have celebrated the festival of Hilaria around the time of the spring equinox. During the festival, they dressed up in costumes and engaged in various light-hearted activities.
The Pranks
There is no list that can pin down all the pranks that you can fall victim to on April Fool’s Day. The pranks keep getting better as each year goes by. From the simple ‘Hey, your shoelace is untied’ to ‘run the building’s on fire’, anything and everything can be a prank. The recent trend shows that you won’t even be able to believe the newspapers or TV channels on the 1st of April. In some places, the people who fall for the tricks and get pranked are called ‘April Fish’.
This April Fool’s Day is sure to stay on your guard. The traps will be all around you. Tread carefully through the path before you and catch a few unsuspecting minds with some creative pranks.
A Happy Fool’s Day to one and all.
