When was the last time you had asked your child, “How are you?” Yes, the exam season brings with it a number of challenges, and many times we tend to focus on the academics and neglect how our kids are coping emotionally. The routines of both our kids and ourselves witness certain changes to cope with the exigencies that are thrown up by the examinations. Well, this should probably be evident to most of you parents who are reading this right now, isn’t it? Our children and we ourselves are more vulnerable on certain levels during this period. Kids tend to be extra prone to erratic outbursts more commonly known as meltdowns. So how do we cope up with this challenge?
Identify the Roots
Where to begin? It is quite simple – identification. We need to identify the factors the trigger meltdowns in our children. Lack of sleep, food habits and feeling too much pressure can easily trigger a meltdown in your child. This in itself does half the job. More often than not, once you identify the trigger, you have also found yourself the solution. For example, if you find out that lack of sleep is the trigger then all you have to do is ensure that your kid gets enough sleep.
Handling Pressure
The amount of pressure that is usually exerted on children during exams is tremendous. This does no good and can, in fact, prove to be quite detrimental to the performance of your kids. Here again, the role of parents become pivotal. Make sure that your kid is not put under undue pressure. Remember that there is a great difference between being serious and putting your kid under unwanted pressure. This can better your kid’s outcomes.
Discipline – the cure to all your woes
What is the best way to prevent exam time meltdowns? A bit of discipline can do the trick. We discussed in the previous blogs about planning your strategy for the examinations and executing it. Let’s see how that becomes beneficial. A good exam plan will help your child finish covering and revising all his portions well before the actual date of the exam. If the study plan is executed with discipline, this would ensure that your child is not overburdened. This would eliminate the need for burning the midnight oil during the last days of preparation. A disciplined routine will ensure that your child goes to bed early and wakes up early. All this does a lot to prevent meltdowns and keep your child in a good frame of mind.
Be there for your kids
As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, it’s not just the students who are affected by the examinations. Parents are affected in no small measure. At times you may be prone to losing it. Your kid may not be following the plan that you both had charted out. Don’t respond to such hurdles with loud outbursts. Rather keep it together and deal with these in more mature and calm ways. At the same time, let your kids know that you are always there for them and that they should not fill themselves with the fear of failure.
This time of tests is surely a testing time but don’t let it get to you or your kids. Remember that no obstacle is unscalable. Once you set your mind to it and work hard, you are sure to reap the benefits. Do your work right and maintain a positive mindset. That should do the trick to avoid unnecessary meltdowns before the exams, inside the exam halls as well as after everything is done.
