Did you love to go to school as a kid? Try to recollect those memories of the days when you had to wake up each morning and get yourself ready for class. Were those moments of joy and enthusiasm? With this small recollection, we realize that going to school was not a fun routine. The same is true in today’s context as well. This brings us to our question of discussion. What about the times when we return to school after being away for some time? How can we help our kids in getting back on track after missing school?
All parents are bound to face this task. At some point in time, it appears out of nowhere and leaves us in trouble. But by following a few steps of caution, this can be easily managed.
Spend an Extra hour or two
Well, this is a no brainer. But it truly is the most unavoidable thing to be done in these situations. When your child starts going to school after a break, the best that you can do is to give her, and her school work some additional time. Try to help her more with the work from school for the first few days. Do this until you are sure that your child has satisfactorily covered the topics that she had missed initially.
Give them a bit of confidence
So, when I said spend time with your kid, did I mean just teach them what they missed out on? Absolutely not! More than that, parents should take care to see that the students are confident in their own abilities. Nudge them to learn the topics with less amount of involvement from your part. It’s more like, ‘teach them to fish’ rather than ‘giving them a fish or two’. It will help satisfy the need at hand while at the same time making the ones that can arise in the future less demanding.
Take special care to let your child know that you believe in her abilities. Saying this repeatedly might firmly implant the thought in the highly impressionable mind of your kid.
Tuning her biological clock back to the school mode
A break from school might change the sleeping pattern, eating pattern and so on. This must be addressed upon return. Well, just getting your mind to the task won’t do, right? What if your body remains in the break or holiday mode? Ensure that your child is getting a good amount of sleep and that she goes early enough to bed. Take care of what your little one is eating as well. Try to provide healthy and nutritional food in case she is making a recovery from a period of illness.
To sum it all up, it’s simple. Just a few basic steps and your kid will be back in action without the least bit of trace of having missed school. But the onus is on you for this. Spend an extra hour or two with your child, helping her out with the lessons that she missed. Speak to her and make her feel confident in herself and her abilities. Finally, ensure that her sleeping and eating cycles are brought back to a normal, school going level. Your kid’s burdens can be drastically reduced with a bit of creative involvement as a responsible and loving parent.
