That is a pretty straightforward question, isn’t it? So how much time should we ideally spend online?
What about 6 hours per day? Is that too much?
Ok then let’s cut down. What about an hour a day? Well, that seems to be too little.
Ah! so then the answer must lay somewhere in between, shouldn’t it?
Let’s get serious now. Keep the numbers aside for a while. Now picturise the world that you live in. Imagine your everyday routine. In a few minutes, if not seconds you will understand (if you not already have) the role that technology plays in our lives today. If you don’t, then you probably live in some part of the world which still lags behind in development. It would be safe to say that the world today revolves around the internet. So yes, remaining online in itself does not constitute a crime. But does that mean that our question is a meaningless one? No, the answer though is a qualitative one rather than being of a quantitative nature.
Endless possibilities
It is not how much time we spend online but how we spend our time online that turns out to be important. Think about it. The internet is a one-stop destination to access information across the globe. Book a cab, order from your favourite restaurant, book a movie ticket, get that brilliant book that released last week, watch that award-winning documentary, read those notes for your test, yes you can do all that and more by staying online. At the same time, you can also spend hours scrolling down social media pages, liking the posts and passing naive comments or watching melodramatic videos. The possibilities are endless and it is based on these that we can have an idea about how much time each individual should spend online. So are we suggesting different time limits for different users? Yes, we most certainly are.
Don’t cut out the physical world
Just because there isn’t a strict limit to the time for staying online, that doesn’t mean that you shut out the real world that is around you. Knowledge gaining online can never be used as a substitute for a healthy relationship with the world around the person. Over-reliance and obsession with the internet should be spotted early and pulled out by the roots. Quality time spent online does not interfere with a healthy and harmonious life offline.
Spot the symptoms
The most reliable confirmation that you are spending more than the desired amount of time online is when it starts showing in your daily routine, mentally or physically. Have trouble sleeping? Feeling physically drained throughout the day? Chances are that your problems are directly linked with an over-active online presence. Nip the habit in the bud to ensure that things don’t get out of control.
Children: an extra bit of caution
Children are reported to be spending around 35 hours per week online. Yes, our kids are definitely more glued to the screens. Responsibility while using the internet should be imbibed in our little ones. Teaching them to use their time online productively is one of the major challenges of the modern school system.
There is no real answer when you ask about how much time we should spend online. It just varies from person to person and from child to child depending upon the degree of judicious use of the time online. At the end of the day, all that matters is you need to strike a perfect balance between your studies and play time. And one more thing! Make sure you spend more time with people around you than in the online space. There are lots of things to learn through little interactions with people around us.
